Life is so very strange. Just last night I had trouble sleeping. So I sat up with many thoughts crossing my mind. One very thought was of and Barbara W. a client of his who I continued to do calligraphy for because she loved my penmanship.
I thought about how laughter was such an integral part of the design experience in the Studio. I so enjoyed sketching beside him. With absolute delight in how quickly he drew a scaled perspective, all while expounding the virtures of 18th. century grape cutters. Two plus years of fun times and ascots.
And today…. I learn of his passing. John knew many people, had alot of friends. I would be selfish to think he came to say goodbye, in my thoughts of him last night, in my sleeplessness.
Such an amazing talent. I was lucky to attend some AMAZING dinner parties at his Round Hill home in Connecticut and at his apartment in the city. It is where I first saw the coffee plaster walls up close, that he loved to feature his projects. Because of John, I gained a love and respect of the power of a feminine pale palette.
John was so funny, he cringed at the color of my favorite my sunflower yellow shirt. Whenever I wore it he’d exclaim “his eyes were burning” (always dramatic), and left lasting good memories. The design community is richer for his contributions. Surely, his soul is resting swathed in the finest velvet evening jacket and silk ascot. With the very best elixir in one hand, a pen in another. With circling sounds of his laughter.
Even through the thickest of times in my career, I look back with such GRATITUDE for the experiences learned, and people I have shared them with. RIP to those who are no longer here, but the sounds of their laughter and lessons shall always remain. RIP
