Campaign Furniture: Folding Luxury
Campaign furniture is a type of furniture specifically designed to be dismantled or folded for easy transport during long journeys, gaining significant popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Historically, it was associated with British military officers who required pieces that combined elegance with practicality while serving abroad.

Modular Design: Large pieces, such as chests of drawers, were made in two separate sections for easier carrying.
Recessed Hardware: Handles and hinges were “sunk” into the wood to save space and prevent damage during shipping.

History of Pen Boxes |

Pen boxes—also known as pen cases or writing boxes—have a long history tied to the development of writing culture. They evolved from simple protective containers into decorative objects reflecting both function and artistry across civilizations.

In the Islamic world, the pen box (maqalama) held special importance from the medieval period. Made from brass, wood, silver, or lacquered papier-mâché, they were often adorned with calligraphy and geometric or vegetal motifs, symbolizing knowledge and status.

In Europe, writing boxes developed between the 17th and 19th centuries alongside expanding literacy. Crafted in wood, leather, and metal, they often included compartments for ink, quills, and seals, combining elegance with practicality.

In East Asia, especially in China and Japan, refined pen and brush boxes were part of scholarly culture, often made of lacquer and linked to the “Four Treasures of the Study,” emphasizing harmony between function and aesthetics.

Today, pen boxes range from simple everyday cases to luxury collectibles, with antique examples valued for their craftsmanship and cultural significance.

Rococo & Rococo Revival Wallpaper (19th & 20th Century)

• Rococo (18th Century Origins): Originally characterized by light colors, asymmetrical designs, curves, and natural motifs like shells and flowers.
• Rococo Revival (19th Century): During the mid-to-late 1800s, there was a major resurgence. Technology allowed for more intricate, machine-printed wallpapers that mimicked the luxurious hand-painted silks of the past.
• Key Features: It featured ornate C-scrolls, S-scrolls, floral garlands, and gold accents. It was used to display wealth and a sense of “Old World” European elegance.
• 20th Century: The style persisted as a classic choice for formal dining rooms and parlors, eventually becoming more simplified or eclectic as modernism took over.

The Century of Sanitation: 1850–1950
This century represents the most radical transformation in hygiene, moving the bathroom from an elite luxury to an essential, standardized part of the modern home.
1850–1900: The Victorian Transition
The “bathroom” was a new concept, often resembling living quarters with wood paneling and rugs. Key features included high-tank gravity toilets and the iconic cast-iron clawfoot tub.
1900–1920: The Sanitary Era
A clinical approach to design emerged. All-white aesthetics, subway tiles, and pedestal sinks became the standard to showcase cleanliness and eliminate unsanitary surfaces.
1920–1950: Art Deco and Standardization
Bold colors like mint green and pink defined the Art Deco period. Post-WWII housing booms finally standardized the compact, efficient layout we use in homes today.

Inauguration Sword Of Ottoman sultan Murad V

The most important ceremony in the inauguration of many Islamic rulers was the investiture with a sword, rather than a crown. This extravagantly decorated saber traditionally is said to have been refitted in 1876 for the investiture of the Ottoman sultan Murad V (reigned May 30–August 31, 1876). He suffered a nervous breakdown before the ceremony and subsequently was deposed and kept a prisoner until his death in 1904.

The History of Custard Cups |

The custard cup is a specialized piece of ceramic or glass tableware that emerged in Europe during the mid-18th century. Its development was closely tied to the rising popularity of “sippets” and creamy, egg-based desserts like pot de crème and custards among the aristocracy. Before the 1700s, custards were often baked in large crusts or shared dishes; however, the Enlightenment era’s shift toward individual service led to the creation of the dedicated cup.
Early examples from the 1750s, produced by renowned factories like Sèvres in France and Meissen in Germany, were often made of soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain. These cups, known in French as pots à jus, typically featured a single handle and a matching lid (cover) to keep the contents warm and prevent a skin from forming on the dairy. During the 19th century, the “custard cup” became a staple of the Victorian formal dinner service. Designs became more varied, including the “baluster” shape and “ornithological” themes. As porcelain production became industrialized, these vessels moved from royal tables to middle-class homes, eventually evolving into the modern ramekin used today.
