Continuing the ocean theme in my way 😏 Octopus in strong contrasts, almost-translucent to almost-black. I love the dynamic in pieces like this where the absence of pigment meets the abundance and then water merges it in magic ways.
And there's something similar with octopus too.. they are both majestic and ugly at the same time, a little unpleasant but still alluring. Can't say I like them but they are so very, very interesting and fun to paint!

Left one is made with my Seashell soft, rosey lilac shade from the new Purple palette by Art to Basic. Handmade eco-friendly watercolors and more, accompanied with Perylene Violet. Amazing depth! The right one is all the greens, blues and blacks, oh yummy. In a way, they represent the mystique and the depth of the seas.

Blending pigments, mixing little potions. At least, that's how it feels 🤭 absolutely adore these rich, potent shades, just like ripe berries. But I'm not painting berries, I set out to make a seahorse. Which is also not what I am painting in the end 😅

A very dessert-ish seashell in the icing looking color combination of Seashell (no 404 in the Purple palette by Mette at Art to Basic. Handmade eco-friendly watercolors and more ) and Buff Titanium and a touch of Perylene Violet.

Green glitter..? Yes, yes I would like to put green shimmering glitter in my purple. Swear, Mette must think I sometimes loose my mind. 😄 but it is gorgeous!
Just barely-there, soft and mostly pearly, just as you would expect the inside of a seashell! And the almost blueish green sheen is a lovely contrast to the rosey lilac.
It shows first when the paint i dry, and then only when you look for it in certain light and angles. Enough to be a little more than just color, little enough not to take over.

Swatching my purple with other colors, and I have a hard time picking my favorites. 🫣 partly blended, but mostly combined so that they can properly complement each other.

Here you see Seashell no 404 from the Purple Palette - soon available - at pushed from it's original rosey lilac state towards yellows and orange, boosted by deep violet, to deep sea blackish blue to blackish green and pale green. One common pearly purple, so many variations. 😍

The pearly green and soft lilac of Seashell, a color named after the almost-iridescent inside of a seashell where you might be so lucky as to find a pearl.

Usually it's my things and pens that grow legs and gets borrowed, but this time I was the one who borrowed my daughter's sharp toothed seashell as inspiration. Loved finding odd shapes as I tried different mixes of the purple with other colors!

"Hey Em, would you like to make a purple color?"

How to kidnap an artist, for sure 😅 lucky me, Mette only wanted to collab for her Purple Palette - a yearly palette she makes with 13 artist, each contributing with a unique shade. This year the color theme is purple and believe me when I say, openinh the palette is like opening a chest of sparkling crystals!

I made no 404 - Seashell. Obviously, I am a bit obsessed with it 🤭
And I could not stick to just a pretty purple because when you get the opportunity to freely choose pigments and watch a skilled craftswoman blend it in front of you, well, I had to go a little over the top.

Because of all the colors in the wheel, purple feels to me like the most other-worldly of them. It does not have rules, and it fits in at the same time as it does not. Purple is like a little portal between realms and that’s what I was trying to capture wiht Seashell.

It is a quite unhurried paint. It mostly goes where you place it, does not explode in the water as more energetic pigments might do. It does however answer with delightful little blooms if you dip water into it, and waters down from a full bodied, creamy lilac to a very translucent rosey hue. There’s little particles that sometimes show. But as it dries, this deceptively lazy purple reveals a gorgeous shimmer! It’s a pearly green that complements the warm lilac wonderfully, adding a touch mystique.

Sometimes I want for a medium that can build light on dark, but then sooner or later I'm always reminded why I love watercolors so much 😍 the transparency and the pigments that travels through it, the explosiveness of color next to the barely-there, thinnest layer and all the expressions in-between. I love the airiness and absence of color just as much as I love the color.

Guess what I found this week on my walk with the dog? Buttercups! Finally! Probably my favorite flower of them all, looks like someone was out in the greenery with a bucket of bright, warm yellow paint and just, splattered it along the walkway 😍
