Winter is coming and after some, even though nice company, pretty cold evenings in camps, I am on a personal quest of never being cold again.
So in purse of my quest I sewed a large hood in wool this summer. However, I also wanted to line it with fur, not just the edges, oh no, FULLY lined.
Fur is a bit of an ethical dilemma, but I try to use upcycled fur so I was looking for a second hand fur coat that I could re-use. And I didn't want mink, as I for some reason just dont like mink. But then I came across this silver fox coat at an auction really cheap so I just had to have it.

Turns out my hood was bigger then I thought so I had really puzzled together pieces to cover everything, but after two days hand sewing first the fur together and then the fur and the wool hood it is finally done!
And it is so cozy! And so warm 😍

So now I will go and live in my fur lined hood, and probably take it off in, well spring 😄

Shellac for stiffening and re-stiffening dark felt hats
Price: 105 SEK/10 Eur
(shipping inc in Sweden, for other countries shipping fees may apply)

Natural shellac flakes are a traditional material used to add stiffness to felt hats and help them retain their shape. Suitable both for stiffening a new hat and for restoring stiffness to a felt hat that has softened over time.

The shellac is intended for use on dark felt hats, as its natural colour may cause discolouration or visible colour changes on light-coloured felt.

The quantity is sufficient for approximately one hat, depending on the size of the hat, the properties of the felt, and the degree of stiffness desired.

**Contains**
• 15 g natural shellac flakes

**You will also need (not included)**
• Approx. 300 ml solvent, such as denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol
• A container for mixing, such as a glass jar
• A suitable tool for application

Please note that the shellac may take several days to dissolve completely.

**Product information**
• Material: 100% natural shellac flakes
• Use: stiffening and re-stiffening hats
• Suitable for: dark wool felt and similar hat-making materials
• Storage: store in a cool, dry place in a tightly sealed container
• Not intended for use in food, cosmetics, or pharmaceuticals

A bowler hat

The bowler hat is it said to have been created by Thomas and William Bowler in 1849 and commissioned by Lock & Co. It was a commissioned by customer who wanted to have a close fitted hat for his gamekeepers as the top hats where being knocked down. It is also suggested they were to hardened and work more like riding helmets and the customer tested it when collecting it by stomping on it twice.
The hat passed the test and he paid twelve shillings, according to the story.

As preparation for my talk about hats from a Swedish folkdress point of view in Halland I came across this statement from an interview with someone born 1867 in the village Alfhög.
They mention something they call
Baselik/Baschlik, a sort of hood in a lighter finer cloth. It sloped in the front with long tips that sometimes had pompoms and sometimes were embroidered. The tips could be tossed over the shoulders or tied.

I haven't really seen anything regarding folk costumes that really fits the description. But then by a coincidence I found a hood in the digital collection of our state museums, that looks very much like the description.
And, hold your horses, the hood is from Äskhults by the place I was gonna give the talk! And is said to belong to one of the Jöns family that lived there in the end of 1800s, that one of the farm is name after.

Unfortunately there is only one picture, so no idea how it looks in the back, or if it is depicted in the right way. It might be more logical to have the cords in the neck than in the front for example.

But I think it is very cool to see what may be a written description and possible the real item
