No.5 – Northern Waters

Inspired by the Nordic coastline, Northern Waters captures the quiet strength and untamed spirit of northern nature.

A Northern Pike( Gädda), one of Scandinavia's most iconic freshwater predators, moves powerfully through the water while two tiny sailing boats drift almost unnoticed on the distant horizon. The dramatic contrast in scale creates a dialogue between human presence and the vastness of the Nordic landscape.

Rather than portraying a specific location, the painting expresses a state of mind — one shaped by stillness, freedom and deep respect for nature. The generous empty space, expressive ink brushwork and subtle washes invite viewers to slow down and experience the calm beneath the surface.

As part of the Places Within series, Northern Waters explores how landscapes become inner places, carrying memory, identity and a profound sense of belonging.

常常披着同一种外表。

画中的哥德堡鱼教堂，见证了这座城市数百年的渔业历史，也见证了无数人与海洋之间的关系。

而这条鲈鱼（European Perch），瑞典Abborre, 停留在鱼饵前，没有前进，也没有后退。

这一刻，没有答案。

真正的故事，
发生在下一秒。

我希望观众停留在这一刻，
重新思考属于自己的选择。

A fish never knows whether the lure before it is a meal or a trap.

Perhaps life is much the same.

Many of our most important decisions happen within a single quiet moment.

Opportunity and danger.
Curiosity and caution.
Hope and uncertainty.

They often wear the same face.

The historic Fish Church of Gothenburg quietly anchors the scene, reminding us of the city's long relationship with the sea and those whose lives have depended on it.

The perch (Abborre) has not yet taken the lure.

It simply pauses.

The story has not begun.

And perhaps that is where the painting truly lives

Many of my friends know that, besides creating original Chinese ink paintings, I have also started transforming my artworks into artistic home décor.

This cushion cover is based on my original ink painting, “The Bite.”

The inspiration comes from a fish commonly found along Sweden’s west coast. Drawn toward a small fishing lure, it is captured in the very moment before it leaps. The composition features generous negative space, blending the poetic beauty of traditional Chinese ink painting with the calm simplicity of Scandinavian design.

“The Bite” can mean something different to everyone.

Some people see danger.

Some see a rare opportunity.

Others see challenge, temptation, or the very moment when fate begins to change.

Isn’t life much the same?

Every day we face choices. Some turn out to be traps, while others become opportunities. Sometimes a single decision quietly changes the direction of our lives.

This cushion is adapted from my original ink painting. By preserving the expressive brushwork and generous negative space, I hope it becomes more than a home accessory—I hope it becomes a piece of art that invites reflection.
