For ten years, I have been fighting the school system on behalf of my children.
Day after day, I have spent my time and energy struggling with authorities and a system that tries to force human beings into predetermined moulds.
And now, I have had enough.
Too many of my days, and too many of my children’s days, have been consumed by demands, conflicts and the expectation that we should abandon ourselves in order to fit in.
I no longer want to take part in that struggle. I am stepping out.
Instead, I choose to begin my mornings by taking in life. I swim in the lake, do my morning practice, breathe with nature and allow myself to notice the immense beauty surrounding us.
In nature, nothing is forced into a particular shape. Everything is allowed to exist according to its own nature, while remaining connected to and supporting the whole.
The painful part is that my child is not yet able to experience life in the same way. But at the very least, I want to show that another way of living is possible.
I dream of a society where we help one another and are allowed to live more freely. Where children, adults and elders meet and are needed in each other’s lives.
I have worked in a day programme and seen how people are placed and kept in separate institutions: children in daycare, young people in schools and other programmes, and older people in care homes. Everyone is separated into different categories and spaces, when we could be living closer together, sharing our abilities and supporting one another.
I don’t know if I will ever experience that society myself. But I hope that one day my children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren will.
A society where life is not about fitting into a mould, but about being fully human.
