U. T. Sirelius wrote in his great book about Finnish rya rugs that rugs made in the islands was those that most resemble the 16th century rugs made for the Swedish kings castles in Finland. Among the islands outside Finland he mention Öland just outside SE Sweden and Vormsö, perhaps today’s Ormsö in Estonia, where people before WWII spoke Swedish. Those rya rugs made for the boats are extremely rare, there are a couple in museums and I this young rug, most are dated between late 18th c and early 19th c, is very nice and seems to be made in the tradition. Not for sale.

This is plate one in Peter Willborgs first book, Flatweaves from fjord and forest published 1984. Peter thought that it was made around 1800 in either Järrestad or South Albo district. It has a couple of repairs and I guess that the picture in the book was photoshopped.
