Margaret Eland Design Nature – simply the best for you Welcome

Horsehair, used since the Bronze Age, was vital across Siberian cultures for its strength, lightness, and versatility.

Peoples of the Baikal region used it for sewing, weaving, and ritual items.

Our work is based on the use of natural horsehair and is entirely handmade, using techniques such as hand weaving, as well as dry and wet felting. The decorative elements feature a variety of traditional embroidery methods, including goldwork and Luneville embroidery. We also incorporate national techniques — such as Ya

kut horsehair weaving and felting — blending heritage craftsmanship with modern decorative standards. We also use fabrics made from the finest quality tail hair of live horses, woven with cotton or silk warps on original looms using traditional methods dating back to 1870. Our work also features natural materials such as leather, suede, cotton, and linen. Horsehair is a remarkable yet unfairly forgotten material. Its unique properties — such as flexibility, durability, and natural texture — make it ideal for use in contemporary design. We value horsehair for its enduring qualities and deep cultural significance.

Each piece is one of a kind, thoughtfully handcrafted using high-quality natural materials.

Decorative Sofa Cushion Concordia by Margaret Eland
This unique pillow is meticulously crafted from horsehair fabric and embellished with hand silver embroidery. The fabric was made from 70% natural black horsehair and 30% cotton threads (UK).

Gold embroidery, also known as "metallic embroidery" or "goldwork," is a traditional embroidery technique that involves the use of gold or metallic threads to create intricate designs on fabric. The embroidery is done using the coaching technique. Couching: The most common technique, where the gold thread is laid on the surface of the fabric and stitched down using another finer thread. The gold threads themselves aren’t passed through the fabric, which helps preserve their shine and prevents them from breaking.
Historically, gold embroidery has been used to decorate garments, religious vestments, and ceremonial textiles, symbolizing wealth, power, and prestige.
Materials for embroidery:
Japanese silver thread
Japanese and French glass beads and metallic threads.
