How To Ink 凹凸印

How To Ink 凹凸印 Live Printmaking Events & Parties • Educational Workshops • Corporate Team Building

Inspired directly by the art of ancient Chinese letterpress printing and embossing, How To Ink is a literal translation of the Chinese characters 凹凸印 (Āo Tú Yìn). This form of printing works on a ying-and-yang principle, by utilising negative and positive moulds to produce certain impressions on paper. Thus, How To Ink translates to our philosophy; by learning about printmaking and handicraft, we would then share by passing down our knowledge with everyone.

We've finally recovered from Singapore Art Book Fair ! We're so appreciative of those who came by and joined our workshops during that hectic weekend. & Many kudos to the trio who tried out our FIRST Basic Reduction Linocut & Print workshop at the fair ❣

Thank you to the team who made us feel so welcomed, and allowing our small studio to be a part of this great event. We've mostly attended as attendees, so this was crazy exciting for us.

What's more is that this felt almost like fate. It is our 10th year anniversary, and honestly we had been bogged down. We honestly weren't planning on doing much, or anything for that matter. And then, out of no where, the SGABF team reached out. We believe that this was truly something special 🫶

This was, perhaps, a spurt to get us moving again. Meeting everyone at the fair and getting inspired by all the wonderful zines there was just what we needed.

Thank you again for letting us be a part of this 💗

(And also we were too busy talking to everyone to take photos of all our participants. Do tag and share your works if you can!)

To us, the most important part of our workshops is "how do we make it accessible?" We standby our fancy (and rather expensive) blades, but we are always on the hunt for better and affordable ones!

We took the plunge and ordered a bunch from Lantern (on Taobao) and gave them a try. First impressions? Most cuts beautifully on various lino blocks, and doesn't cost a bomb. The bigger blades are a little trickier to control, mostly due to the amount of lino it would pick up.

What impressed us the most was the multi-line cutters! Cuts like butter, and creates amazing patterns EASY. The only issue is that more effort is needed to maintain the blades.

We shall keep you guys updated as we play around these new blades!

Big fans of pur-ints, always. Newton and Bennett came by to immortalise these two by screen-printing them on various totes. Keep a look out and you might just see these cuties out and about.

We recently had the pleasure of assisting artist Yanyun Chen (www.yanyunchendrawings.com)in bringing her artwork “Rotan Rattan: Notions of Labour — Uttar Pradesh” to life through screen printing.

The piece features an industrial plywood panel resting on a plantation/planter's chair, a symbol of colonial power and rule over farmers and farm lands during 19th century South and Southeast Asia. Burnt into the plywood are marks of rattan canes (a disciplinary tool) and an archive image of a worker holding up a species of rattan, Calamus tenuis, from Kansrao, Dehra Dun Forest Division, Uttar Pradesh from a research text "Canes (rattans) : their occurrence, cultivation and exploitation in India / by R.L. Badhwar, A.C. Dey and S. Ramaswami" published in 1958.

As Yanyun describes, “Here, the labourer is finally taking a rest in the seat of power.”

At How To Ink, we assisted by preparing the screen printing frames. She then used said frames to apply wood-burning paste onto plywood, creating the distinctive scorched textures seen in the final artwork.

The work is part of The Private Museum's (theprivatemuseum.org) landmark exhibition ‘Towards Happiness, Prosperity & Progress: Reflections on the Singapore Spirit’, featuring 60 Singaporean and Singapore-based artists reflecting on what the Singapore spirit means, in celebration of Singapore’s 60th year of independence. The exhibition runs till 7 December 2025.

Always excited to watch Benny (scong.net) in action. He worked tirelessly on this 3-layer print of his OC, Full Metal P***y. It was great watching it all come together. The mix of organic and robotic parts matched perfectly with the neon colour scheme!

When we first moved to Havelock, we were excited that we could start hosting workshops in our own cosy studio. It has been 5 years since, and we still get butterflies whenever you guys come by. It's always a great way to introduce printmaking, be it screen-printing or linocut, and connect with everyone in a warm space 💗

Just last week we held our Drawn to Silkscreen workshop for two soon-to-be parents, wanting to create prints to decorate their new baby room. So glad to be a part of this 🫶 and can't wait to see them all hung up.

Our 10th anniversary got a little more special when Speedball Art Products sent us their latest water-based Flex screenprinting inks. Obviously, we took this chance to give ourselves new drips, from top to toe (quite literally).

Inkman Stan put these new inks to the test, featuring our logo and prints inspired by our cats 🐈 Watch on and you’ll see why it’s such a great addition to our studio. Hint: opaque, flexible, no peel, soft and it’s real easy to mix your own colours.

& We’re happy to announce that it also survived the wash and looks like it was just printed seconds ago.
