A BTO built around one table. 🤍

For this young family, the brief was clear: the dining area had to be "the warm heart of our home." So everything else was designed to stay quiet around it — oak, warm white and stone, flat handle-free doors, rounded corners, and soft light under every cabinet.

And the storage? Most of it you'll never see. The sideboard lifts and opens into a garage for the robot vacuum. Shoes and pet food live behind oak slats. Cables disappear into a slatted TV console.

Our clients didn't name their home after a style. They named it Embernook.

Ember — because this family has kept a fire for three generations. Grandparents, uncles, mum: hawkers, all of them. So the kitchen isn't a showpiece. It's a working hawker's kitchen — open steel shelving, heavy pots within reach, Peranakan tiles underfoot melting into terrazzo.

Nook — because home had to be a safe corner. One of our homeowners is autistic with ADHD, and experiences the world at full volume. So every surface is matte, so no glare shouts. The palette stays at a quiet baseline — the blue of the old Kallang Basin pool (painted right onto the bathroom pipe), the green of the park connectors, warm wood — with sparks of orange, red and yellow that get to sing without shouting.

And the three aging dogs? R11 floor tiles grip their paws. The tile colour hides their fur. The furniture sits high enough to make cool, low dens beneath.

Loud colours. Quiet house. Nothing curated for trends — everything shaped by life.

The White Peacock - It stands in the living area niche surrounded by their photographs — pride, beauty, heritage in one bird. The reconstruction lets the house wear it, a classical display fanned out in pure white, from the ribbed vault spreading over the dining room to balustrades and arches repeating at every scale, with a single red flash at the gate.

Beneath the display, the nest: five rooms grown around five lives, a chapel of their own, portraits climbing the staircase faster than they can be framed. All of it standing on the original columns — retained, reinforced, and raised a full storey taller.

In our last post, this home lived in a permanent golden hour.

We left something out.

The bedrooms refused to join.

Past the bedroom doors, the bronze stops. The palette flips — white marble, soft brass, boucle. Materials that hold the day's first light instead of its last. Because nobody wants to fall asleep at dusk and wake up in it too.

And the children's rooms go one step further: platform beds that step down in waves, where every step is a drawer. Porthole windows cut for peeking. A desk that will outlast the toys beside it. Rooms designed for age six — and age sixteen.

One half of the home set to evening. The other half set to morning.
