Mappa Burl is the result of abnormal growth. When a tree is stressed, the grain responds by growing in every direction at once. The result is the most unpredictable figuring in the range: swirling patterns, clustered eyes and chatoyance that shifts with every change in light.

Set in crystal clear epoxy and sitting on our Luminara legs, the slab stays the undeniable focal point while the materials around it step back completely. The combination is deliberate. Everything transparent so that nothing competes.

The swirling patterns, the eyes scattered across the surface, the grain that moves in every direction at once. None of it was designed. All of it was grown.

In a darker room it commands attention. In a space like this one, flooded with light, it breathes. The natural Ash Oculus frame and matching chairs hold the same warm tone as the burl without competing with it. The whole room pulls in the same direction.

One of the densest, darkest species in our range. Deep brown tones, tight grain, a surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. In a lighter space it commands attention. In a room like this one, it belongs completely.

The brief was clear from the start. The space is moody, considered and deliberately dark. African Ebony was the perfect answer.

Japanese Zelkova. A premium species by any measure, warm golden grain, subtle figuring, the kind of slab that usually sits well outside the Foundation Line range. This one came in under 2.4m.

So here it is. Same Foundation Line sizing. Different species entirely.

/ When Mad Men aired in 2007, the Eames chair featured in the show doubled in sales. One series, set in the 1960s, reminded an entire generation what good design looked like.

Mid-Century Modern has not really been a trend since. It has become the default language of considered design.

If your space leans MCM, American Black Walnut, Burmese Teak and Japanese Zelkova are the species we would reach for first. Our recommendation, not a rule.
