This design began life very differently, as a tiger illustrated in shades of blue, inspired by the timeless beauty of antique Chinese blue and white porcelain. As the design evolved, so did the colour palette, eventually becoming the warm tropical print you see today.
Our original intention was to hand block print it. We worked through several samples with our artisans, but despite multiple attempts, the intricate details of the tiger, palms and decorative arch simply couldn’t be reproduced with the clarity we had envisioned.
Rather than compromise the artwork, we made the decision to digitally print the fabric so every fine line, stripe and decorative detail remained true to the original illustration.
As we begin sampling this print across our tote bags, wash bags and a few exciting new products, we’ll continue exploring traditional techniques too. With different scales and applications, there’s every chance we’ll revisit hand block printing or experiment with traditional screen printing to see if we can achieve the result we’re looking for.
Sometimes the design leads the process, and sometimes the process shapes the design. This one is still evolving, and we’re excited to see where it takes us.
