Designing for elderly homeowners is easy to get wrong in one direction. Make it too clinical, and it stops feeling like home.

The harder version is calm that still accounts for reach, lighting, hinges, heights, without ever announcing itself as "designed for aging."

We talked to the designer about where those calls actually got made.

Most renovations start with a floor plan. This one started with a visit to their old flat.

We measured furniture they'd used for years before drawing a single cabinet, so nothing here would feel unfamiliar on move-in day. Everything after that followed the same logic. Curved corners. Hinges that swing all the way open. A kitchen island that does three jobs depending on what the day calls for.

Wabi-sabi gets used a lot as a style word. Here it just meant building a home around exactly how two people live, not how a showroom photographs.

We measured their old furniture before we designed a single cabinet here.

For a couple downsizing into a 2-room flexi, that mattered more than any render could. Every height stayed familiar, every corner became storage, and the one thing we let stand out was the kitchen backing, brought in as a single slab with zero joint lines.

Even the mirror placement was intentional. Inside the wardrobe, not outside, so nobody gets startled walking past it at night.

This is what calm actually looks like when you build it in on purpose.

We didn't want another office. We wanted a studio built the way we actually think about design.

Every corner here was decided on purpose. The materials wall isn't decoration, it's where a conversation about your home starts before a single render gets made. The meeting table isn't just furniture, it's where sketches turn into revisions turn into something real.

No shortcuts. No one-size-fits-all layouts pulled off a template. Every project that comes through this space gets the same thing: our full attention, and the freedom to choose what actually works for that client, not what's easiest for us.

This studio has a story that started long before the space did. Welcome to where it lives now.

Before anything gets built, it gets figured out here.

Material samples on the table, 3D drafts up on the screen, the whole team going back and forth on what actually works. The shelves behind us hold years of projects and recognition, still sitting next to whatever we're deciding on today.

This is just a normal day at D5 Studio Image.
