Capturing the Whimsical Spirit of Haji Lane 🎨✨
"Haji Lane Shophouses" 24"x18" oil on canvas ~ the colourful banners from a bus view of the narrow alley first attracted me to this inviting scene but it is the vibrance of the eclectic street with its energetic indie shops, boundless street art, and multitude of quirky signs and decor what-nots popping up all over from the long narrow row of quaint shophouses that add to the joyful atmosphere enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike, which is the whimsical spirit I seek to capture in this happy piece.

Happy with how my Haji Lane Shophouses finally turned out! Painting is oft a journey of discovery and problem-solving and so it was with this one. And i like my bright joyful outcome :) Enjoy exploring Haji Lane! As I did with my visit and then capturing it on canvas. For the record, 24"x18" oil painting.

🎨 Haji Lane Nostalgia: My 🇸🇬 Shophouse Painting Journey Continues
Continuing my work on Haji Lane ~ a buzzy place that attracts precisely because of its eclectic array of crazy stuff, arty or otherwise, popping up anywhere and anyhow, between the busy clutter of little shophouses and popping signs within this colourful narrow street. Its ever-changing too but I particularly like it when its opening act was this striking peach red-green colour architectural columns with the quirky teh tarik uncle mural when I first visited to take reference pics - alas the green and uncle are no more when I passed by again on a bus recently so I am capturing the magical duh moment that prompted me to paint on canvas instead.

I was asked if every artist in SG paints this iconic red-and-white Tong Ah building at Keong Saik Road. Perhaps. But artist also brings his or her own unique interpretation to this iconic architecture. To me, it is not just the shophouse but its surrounds where it stands proud as a silent witness to the changing urban landscape. So this is my whimsical take and the exact feel that it gives me when I see it, anchoring 2 rambling streets, each with their own architectural charms and quirks. The skyscraper backdrop is intentionally blurred, it will not surpass the presence and spirit of this shophouse building.
