The Luxury of Tempo: Reflections from an Off-Grid Morning in Japan
During the 6.6 fast-retail frenzy created by others, I found myself sitting in a local park in Japan, deliberately off-grid. No screens, no AI—just a notebook, a pencil, and the quiet space to meditate on the future.
For the past 60 years, Singapore has been a marvel of non-stop growth and reinvention. We are driven, highly strung, and constantly pushing boundaries. Yet, as a small city-state, we do not have the luxury of geographic scale, and our everyday pace of life is unyieldingly fast.
Japan offers a striking contrast. The sheer size of the country allows you a different kind of luxury: the freedom to choose your own tempo. You can find a city that aligns perfectly with your current season of life—be it the relentless, vibrant energy of Tokyo for the globetrotters, the serene, nature-bound retreat of Karuizawa for young seniors like myself, or the thrilling slopes of Hakuba for the yuppies who still love to snowboard.
This contrast is exactly why we are spending a month here working on our Nippon House project. At atomi, we don't just curate Japanese furniture; we curate the Japanese philosophy of intentional living. Whether it is a modular sofa or a handcrafted dining chair, we want to bring back to the fast-paced heart of Singapore a piece of that chosen tempo, that mindful pause.
While we take this time to reflect, write, and build, our wonderful atomi angels are keeping the rhythm going at our Mandarin Gallery boutique. In a world that constantly demands you to move faster, what tempo are you choosing for your life today?
