We are back to work today at 2Q Workspace and we kick off 2026 with a brand new quilt!
From .grain quilt logs: The Alaska Quilt Pattern by
The satisfaction of seeing how the pieced blocks come together at the end made the detours in this patchwork journey all worth it.
At the start, I tackled this pattern with its original templates and traditional rulers, but it was a challenge to achieve the precision that I wanted. And a recommendation from a fellow quilter (Thank you, !) changed my entire game plan.
Fern suggested that I try the Wedge Star ruler by . Indeed, it made the cutting process easier, and the trim-down technique helped me achieve more accuracy in piecing my blocks.
I attached grip discs/dots on the back of the ruler for the extra stability to prevent shifting. The Metallic Essex Yarn dyed fabric collection has one of the best blings ever, but it is not easiest material to tame! Having the right tools really helped.
The wedge star rulers look like a specialised ruler but they are very versatile they produce a variety of blocks based on 45 degree sub-units. They range from the simple kaleidoscope blocks to complex wedge stars with diamond points. Units can be interchanged to create unlimited designs, and there are 22 different size options built into the tools, ranging from 3" to 24" finished.
Overall, working on the Alaska Quilt Pattern has been a fun and rewarding experience with the help of this fantastic ruler!
This is so fun that I made more Alaska Quilts but in different sizes! Stay tuned to see them!
