“This was a new kind of chair, constructed totally out of leather, much cloned since then.” Thus Mario Bellini describes Cab, a bestseller that he designed in the 1970s, which is now a signature piece in Cassina’s I Contemporanei collection. Cab was the first-ever chair to feature a free-standing leather structure, inspired by how our skin fits over our skeleton. The upholstery consists of sixteen pieces of saddle leather. They undergo fourteen discrete procedures, again by hand. The pieces are sewn together only when their outer edges have been trimmed to ensure a perfect fit. Once assembled, the cover is attached to the chair’s steel skeleton and held in place by means of a zipper fastening, as in a bespoke tailored garment. Today this model adapts and expands to meet contemporary needs. It is now available an XL model, 5cm deeper, and a Baby version, made with the same careful craftsmanship. Also available are new Plus saddle leathers in pure aniline, and some versions with a gradient effect by hand on a natural basis.

Light sinuous lines celebrate conviviality in a design table that draws from nature its inspiration for balance. Ronan Bouroullec, with his poetic universe of shapes and influences, designs a piece of furniture that acquires its sculptural energy from the pairing of materials and tone-on-tone colours.

The collection is proposed with two different-shaped bases; one three-lobed for the round tabletops, the other in an infinity shape for the oval tables, and a large round one with three legs.

With the various models of Fauteuil Grand Confort, grand modèle, the concept of modernity is expressed through the separation between the metal support frame and the upholstered elements. The loose cushions are set inside a painted or chrome-plated tubular steel cage that forms the primary support for the piece in all its variations ‒ from the armchair with armrest on one or both sides, to the two- and three-seat sofas.

Over the years, Cassina has worked very closely with Charlotte Perriand, her daughter Pernette and the Fondation Le Corbusier to introduce new versions and finishes that, while reinterpreting the original design, remain faithful to its authentic nature. These models are also available in an eco-friendly version. Thanks to a study conducted by Cassina LAB, a partnership between the Cassina Research and Development Center and the Poli.design consortium of the Politecnico University in Milan, the foam-fill parts, the padding in the cushions and the tubular structure are produced with sustainable materials and processes.

By separating the painted or chrome-plated tubular steel frame from its loose, plush cushions, Cassina redefines the architectural silhouette. The anecdote tells of how Cesare Cassina punched a prototype of Maralunga with his clenched fist when it was shown to him by the Milanese architect, as the piece failed to completely meet his demand for extreme comfort. The consequent break of the poor sofa back was just the enlightenment Magistretti needed: the clumsy movement showed him the intuitive criterion needed to make this traditional element more innovative and he commented, “right, great, it looks perfect to me like that”.

Designed in 1928 and made famous since 1965 by Cassina, 4 Chaise longue à réglage continu is the quintessential chaise longue. Placing man at the centre of attention and starting with the analysis of lounge chairs and the proportions inferred by Le Corbusier with the Modulor, it embodies the concept of comfort in the shape of the seat, which is modelled on the natural contours of the body. The recliner is angled to promote rest and its stability is ensured through friction with the rubber tubes that sheathe the crosspieces on the base.
