TUESDAY INSPIRATION: A 500-Year-Old Temple Meets a Scholar’s House.
Yunxi Coffee 耘熹咖啡 in Weishan Ancient Town (巍山古城 wěi shān gǔ chéng), Dali, Yunnan, isn’t just one building - it’s two. It’s a 500-year-old God of Medicine Temple (药王庙) from the Ming Dynasty, where locals once prayed for healing, alongside a scholar’s courtyard home from the late Qing Dynasty, more than a century old. The scholar who lived here passed the highest level of China’s imperial exams - a mark of elite achievement.
Architects dedicated seven years to carefully restoring the compound, preserving every original detail: walls, beams, eaves, wooden plaques documenting the temple’s history, and faded murals carefully brought back to life. The courtyard is anchored by beautiful old trees and lush plantings - a serene garden that echoes the scholar’s refined aesthetic.
Inside, large wooden medicine cabinets serve as reminders of the temple’s sacred purpose. Historically, healing temples like this one housed herbal remedies and blessed prescriptions that monks and priests distributed to worshippers seeking health and protection. Solid wood antique furniture sourced locally, and curated art pieces create a wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Walking through feels less like entering a cafe and more like stepping back five centuries - a space that’s preserved and breathing together.
