Join us for a Tsumami Zaiku workshop and fold your own upcycled Chusen dyed fabric into an elegant chrysanthemum flower pendant. Guided step by step by Tsumami Zaiku Certified trainers Ong Hui Ying and Jossie Pang from Palette Japan, this is a hands on opportunity to learn a 200 year old craft technique from start to finish.

Each kit uses Chusen dyed fabric, known for its soft, hand poured gradients and one of a kind colours. Leftover fabric is given new life through Tsumami Zaiku, with every petal folded by hand in the spirit of mottainai, the Japanese practice of honouring resources and letting nothing go to waste. By the end of the session, you will have your own finished chrysanthemum pendant.

The pouch is made with Sakai Chusen fabric, a hand dyed textile with 200 years of history from Sakai, Osaka. It comes from off grade material once left unused at the factory, now given new purpose through Sashiko, a Japanese needlework tradition built on mending and extending the life of textiles.

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese decorative cord used for generations to adorn gifts and envelopes, expressing gratitude, respect and good wishes for the person receiving them. In this workshop, Japanese craft expert Ms. Tomoko Ota from Palette Japan, assisted by certified trainers Agnes Tay and Agnes Thing, will guide you through the history and original role of Mizuhiki in Japanese culture. You'll then learn Ume musubi, a traditional Mizuhiki knot shaped like a plum blossom. Tied firmly and difficult to undo, it's often associated with strong bonds and lasting relationships.

Finally, transform your Ume musubi into your very own pair of earrings, made entirely with your own hands. Whether you're new to Japanese crafts or looking to deepen your skills, this workshop is the perfect introduction to the art of Mizuhiki.
