Given the limitations of our small, urban homes, we chose to stretch our imagination, and started creating 'big' gardens in constrained spaces. Our little big gardens stretch the physical and mental landscape, challenging and inspiring us daily.

This guy is such a talking point at our shop so we’re giving it some special attention today.

The Monkey Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis) is a trailing succulent. It’s got soft, white spines that resemble a monkey’s tail, and you can stroke it in one direction only, or else you’ll find some of the spines stuck in your fingers. It thrives in full sunlight and well-draining soil. We hardly water it but mist it quite often. Because of this it has grown a few little ‘babies’.

Mature plants can produce vibrant, red flowers that are super spectacular. We’ve seen one of our customer’s Monkey tail full of flowers. He waters it once in a long while and keeps it in full sun.

So who’s ready to bring this guy back home to a sunny balcony or porch?

We are in the midst of updating our website to include useful information on plants and plant care, so that it's easier for you to make practical buying decisions when it comes to your green babies.

In the meantime, we would like to introduce our range of plants that are "Rooted in Glass". These are grown in LECA or Sugibase using the semi-hydro method.

What's semi-hydro?
• Basically, roots of the plant grow in lightweight clay pebbles (LECA) or cedar woodchips—no soil.
• It's planted in a glass vessel that holds water below the roots. Roots drink only what they need—no overwatering.
• Refill water only when water evaporates almost completely.

We have 4 plants to start with:
• Variegated umbrella tree
• Burmese rosewood (young tree)
• Calathea makoyana - pet safe
• Calathea vittata - pet safe

Check out their care details on the website–link on our profile.
