Random Japanese home fact we really liked:

Shikibuton Futons aren't necessarily something that has to stay on the floor all day.

They can be folded and stored away when they're not being used, which gives the same small room a completely different purpose.

Kind of a simple idea, but honestly quite clever.

Absolutely.

We love to have a little morning buffer time. No rushing, no immediately checking what needs to be done, no trying to squeeze something labelled "productive" into every available minute.

Somewhere between “I need more space” and “I need another room” is probably a very useful question:

Can the room I already have do both? 🤔

It’s one of those things that’s easy to overlook when planning a new home. We tend to assign rooms very serious job titles and then furnish them accordingly. Meanwhile, the room is sitting there like, I can multitask, you know.

You know what’s funny? 🤭

The names were basically sitting there explaining themselves the whole time.

Shiku means to lay or spread something out.
Kakeru means to hang or put something over.

The clue was hiding in plain sight the entire time.

Floor seating isn't just sit on the floor and hope for the best.

Tatami is intentionally firm, giving you a stable surface to sit, kneel or move around on. Add a cushion when your knees and hips start asking for better blood circulation.

I guess you could say that sitting on the floor has its own difficulty settings. 😂
