Tea Ware by Junzo Maekawa

Ceramic artist Junzo Maekawa brings a refined contemporary sensibility to Tokoname ware, a ceramic tradition with a long history in Aichi Prefecture and one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.

His teapots are particularly suited to the careful preparation of gyokuro and other fine Japanese or Chinese teas. Their considered proportions and quiet presence reflect an understanding of tea ware not simply as a vessel, but as a tool that shapes the experience of brewing and appreciating tea.

Maekawa’s distinctive surfaces and restrained details give each piece a subtle individuality, while remaining deeply connected to the tradition of Tokoname—a region renowned for its teapots and tea culture.

A limited selection of Junzo Maekawa’s tea ware is now available at HULS Gallery Duxton Hill, offering an opportunity to discover vessels made for those who wish to enjoy the character and nuance of fine tea.

New Works by Yuko Sekino

Based in Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture, glass artist Yuko Sekino creates vessels distinguished by their gentle forms and the delicate expressions of air bubbles held within the glass.

Her latest collection includes sake ware and cups in which countless bubbles appear to float quietly beneath the surface, catching the light and giving each piece a unique sense of depth and movement. While each vessel carries the individuality of a handcrafted work, Sekino’s pieces are also designed to sit naturally in everyday life—bringing a subtle beauty to moments of drinking and dining.

A limited selection of these new works has just arrived at HULS Gallery Duxton Hill. We invite you to experience the warmth and quiet character of Sekino’s glass in person.

Kogei’s Place in Our Lives

What place does kogei hold in our lives today?

“Kogei’s Place in Our Lives,” the brand book of HULS Gallery, explores this question through beautiful photography and thoughtful writing on Japanese craftsmanship.

The book brings together images that capture the materials, textures, landscapes, and quiet presence of contemporary kogei, alongside a series of columns by the founder of HULS Gallery. Through reflections on craft, Japanese aesthetics, the regions where objects are made, and their place in everyday life, the book shares the perspective that has shaped HULS Gallery over the years.

More than a collection of beautiful objects, it is an invitation to discover the stories, people, and places behind Japanese craftsmanship—and to consider how kogei can enrich the way we live today.

Now available at all HULS Gallery locations and our Online Store.

The Quiet Elegance of Gold – Tea Ware by Junzo Maekawa

Ceramic artist Junzo Maekawa brings a contemporary sensibility to Tokoname ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. His tea ware is distinguished by strong yet refined forms, shaped through a deep understanding of clay and the tradition of the region.

In this collection, delicate gold decoration is applied with remarkable restraint. Rather than creating a sense of opulence, the subtle gold gently emerges against the dark surface of the clay, adding a quiet luminosity and refined presence to each piece.

A limited selection of Maekawa’s popular teapots and tea cups is now available at HULS Gallery Duxton Hill.
