Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln — Pop-up & Live Demonstrations

Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln, a historic kiln of specialising in Mikawachi ware from Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, at Takashimaya Singapore.

With roots dating back to the Edo period, the kiln is renowned for its delicate porcelain and intricate Hirado chrysanthemum decoration, with each petal is carefully carved by hand. Today, 18th-generation head , Taiyo Nakazato continues this remarkable tradition, bringing a contemporary sensibility to centuries of craftsmanship.

We are delighted to welcome Taiyo Nakazato and Yukimi Nakazato for special live demonstrations, offering a rare opportunity to witness the artistry and dedication behind these exceptional works.

The Return of Blur White on Black

The much-loved Blur White on Black tea ware by Tokoname ceramic artist Junzo Maekawa has finally returned to HULS Gallery Singapore.

Rooted in the rich tradition of Tokoname ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, Maekawa’s works reveal the beauty of meticulous handcraftsmanship. The soft, blurred white tones against a deep black surface create a striking yet understated expression, bringing a contemporary sensibility to traditional Japanese tea ware.

The collection includes beautifully crafted round, flat teapots and shiboridashi, each thoughtfully shaped by hand to enhance the quiet ritual of preparing tea.

A New Motif in Seto Blue

Shingama, a pottery studio founded in Seto in 1919, carries forward the tradition of Seto Sometsuke, known for its delicate blue-and-white decoration.

This sake set features a newly introduced motif, hand-painted with graceful brushwork on a softly matte porcelain surface. The fresh design brings a new expression to Shingama’s enduring craftsmanship, while preserving the refined beauty and subtle shades of blue characteristic of Seto Sometsuke.

Based in Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture, glass artist Yuko Sekino creates vessels distinguished by their gentle forms and the delicate expressions of air bubbles held within the glass.

Her latest collection includes sake ware and cups in which countless bubbles appear to float quietly beneath the surface, catching the light and giving each piece a unique sense of depth and movement. While each vessel carries the individuality of a handcrafted work, Sekino’s pieces are also designed to sit naturally in everyday life—bringing a subtle beauty to moments of drinking and dining.

Toukaji Bowl – The Colour of Peach Blossoms
Ceramic artist Nobuyuki Kimura has devoted much of his practice to exploring the expressive possibilities of glaze and colour. Born into a ceramic family in Kyoto, he develops his distinctive hues through repeated experiments in glaze blending and meticulous test firing.

Among his signature expressions is Toukaji, a delicate pale pink reminiscent of peach blossoms in spring. Achieving this gentle colour requires a precise balance of glaze composition and firing conditions, giving each vessel subtle variations in tone and depth.

The Toukaji Bowl embodies this pursuit of colour in a quiet, graceful form. Its softly luminous pink changes gently with the surrounding light, revealing the sensitivity and refinement characteristic of Kimura’s work.

Many Expressions, One Artist – Sake Ware by Nobuyuki Kimura

Ceramic artist Nobuyuki Kimura reveals a remarkable range of expression through his collection of sake ware. Created by the hands of a single artist, each guinomi possesses its own character, inviting us to discover the breadth of his approach to clay and glaze.

Kimura is known for his oil-spot Tenmoku, with its deep, lustrous surface and shimmering patterns. Equally captivating are his celadon works, where delicate kan-nyu crackles spread across the softly coloured glaze, creating a quiet sense of depth and refinement.

Though made as sake cups, these intimate vessels can also be enjoyed as tea cups, allowing their varied textures and forms to become part of different daily rituals.
