The future is Young at the march on Thursday with their lihiya

The Future is Young lihiya! Designed, printed and made in Eswatini. Read below for more interesting facts about emahiya.

"Our lihiya is printed in orange which represents the energy and enthusiasm of youth. It has two parts; the past features a man showing us that patriarchy was then in charge. It also features the negative words said to the youth whenever they tried to change and improve. In the corners we have huts, as they were in the past.
The future part is a woman showing the eradication of patriarchy. It also shows the revolution from the past to the future where youth are encouraged to be independent and grow. The positive words reflect support for them. In the corners there are graduation hats representing the positive education they will have in order to grow the country towards a prosperous future." FIY group

"The patterns on blue / grey tishweshwe cloth were originally traditional Indonesian designs. These were copied by Indian cotton cloth weavers who dominated cotton weaving for many centuries. Indian cloth was traded by Arabs down east coast of Africa in dhows; cotton cloth threads have been found at the Mapungubwe culture on the banks of the Limpopo from the 11th and 12th centuries AD. At an unknown date Indian cloth was added to traditional male Nguni attire by wrapping it around the waist under the emajobo, or animal skins. ln the late 1800s brightly coloured emahiya were designed and made in England and exported here. They were first worn by women, then in the 1930s King Sobhuza encouraged use by men and Swazi traditional dress was established. In the run up to Independence in 1968 red, white and black were increasingly identified with the Mbokodvo royalist party. By the 1980s all British cotton mills had closed and production shifted back east to India and China which produce emahiya today."
