PASSERBAR
Most people have walked across concrete sidewalk slabs countless times—hearing the sound of footsteps, noticing uneven surfaces, lifted edges, or displaced panels shaped by years of urban use. These sidewalk slabs were originally designed to distribute loads horizontally, serving as simple surfaces for movement throughout the city. But what if they could do more? What if the same material could be reimagined to carry loads vertically—transforming from pavement into columns, walls, furniture, and architectural space? Passerbar begins with this simple question. Rather than seeing the lifted or displaced sidewalk slab as a defect, the project explores its hidden potential. By altering the role and structural behavior of an ordinary urban material, concrete paving slabs are stacked and reassembled into a load-bearing system capable of generating architecture. The resulting structure becomes a café, bar, and workspace—a place where people can pause instead of pass through. A Monday morning coffee before work, a Friday night drink with friends, or an informal meeting during the day all take place within a space constructed from one of the city's most overlooked elements. More than a hospitality venue, Passerbar is an architectural experiment that transforms a small urban defect into a new public possibility. It demonstrates how ordinary materials, when reinterpreted through a different lens, can generate new forms of architecture, social interaction, and urban life.
