WABI SABI & KOREAN FURNITURE.

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophical and aesthetic concept that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence and simplicity. It encourages accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay, valuing authentic, aged, or flawed objects over modern, perfect ones. It is a mindset focused on appreciating rustic, modest, and quiet moments.

Wabi-sabi describes a delicate, refined, and understated elegance, one that is not immediately obvious but deeply pleasing, often revealing itself only upon close attention. It evokes a sense of charm, grace, and quiet attractiveness that whispers rather than shouts, favoring natural, restrained details over bold, dramatic, or overcrowded displays.

Thanks to its overall design, Korean furniture integrates well into such environments.

Three-Tier Cabinet (Samcheung Jang)

Late Joseon dynasty, 19th century
Wood (zelkova front panels and pine), iron fittings
This refined cabinet exemplifies the restrained elegance of late Joseon furniture. Composed of three stacked sections with small drawers along the top, it features a framed-panel construction (teul jjaim) that accentuates the natural grain of the wood.
The dark-lacquered frame contrasts harmoniously with the warm, reddish tones of the panels.
Minimal iron fittings and the gently curved cabriole legs reflect the Neo-Confucian aesthetic ideals of simplicity and balance favored by the yangban elite. The form shows influence from Chinese Ming furniture, yet its proportions and quiet dignity are distinctively Korean. Such cabinets were used in upper-class households to store clothing, documents, or valuable personal items.

Three level bookchest. Pine wood body, paulownia wood front. Yellow brass fittings. H. 120cm, W. 113cm, D. 43cm.
The paulownia wood used for the front was finished with the “Nakdong Method”. This process involved the removal of soft fibers by rubbing the wood’s surface with rice straw and then burning it, leaving behind only the hard grain. When this method was used, it revealed a rich, dark brownish-black color and brought out the beautiful grain of the wood. Subsequently, the surface was coated with natural oil, making the wood more resistant to fire, insects, and fungus. This technique has been known in Japan since the 18th century as “shou sugi ban” (焼杉板) and is primarily used on cedarwood.
The circular doors fittings pattern symbolizes the universe or the sun.
