A SPECIAL REQUEST
FROM PRESIDENT RAMOS-HORTA FOR POPE LEO

At the request of Presidente José Ramos-Horta our team got together to design a special gift box to be presented to Pope Leo during the President’s state visit. Thank you Mr. President for the honor. You made our artisans and the whole team at our studio proud to be part of show-casing Timorese culture and traditions at the highest level, once again. May Pope Leo's papacy reinforce the message of peace, love, humanity and responsibility brought to Timor by Pope Francis.

The Tais presented by President Ramos-Horta to Pope Leo was especially selected by the President himself and his Office team from Things and Stories’s collection. It was a three panel Makpa’uf “Beti Bose” tais mane from Oecusse (men’s cloth) in tones of blue and white, woven in local hand-spun cotton and hand-dyed with natural colors, from master weaver Filomena Eta.

CONNECTING SINGAPORE TOURISM OPERATORS TO TIMORESE CULTURE AND HANDICRAFTS

We were delighted to host a hands-on experience into Timor’s traditions in handicraft, as we welcomed the HOTL Association and ADB Timor-Leste’s discovery visit organized for Singaporean tour operators. Our visitors had the chance to meet some of the artisans working with us for over 10 years and to actually experience traditional tais weaving and pottery making.

No better way to learn the value of “hand-made” than to get down on the floor for a personal experience handling the back-strap loom with the serene guidance of a true master weaver, or trying to follow the experienced movements of the women potters of Asalaino as you shape a piece of clay into a perfectly round pot with a paddle and anvil.

This was the first glimpse at what the future will look like at our handicraft center in the heart of Dili. Lots of life, happiness, hands-on learning and most of all, connecting people.

We thank the women that traveled far to be part of this experience. The women potters of Asalaino, Feto Fitun Frontera weavers from Oecusse, Feto Buka Rasik Weavers from Marobo and Lo’ud Cooperative from Lospalos. We thank also ADB Timor-Leste, HOTL Association and Adventures for making local culture and handicraft one of the focus of this discovery visit !
