Moye Jingshe, situated at Waishuangxi in Shilin, Taipei, was the late-life residence personally designed and laid out by Zhang Daqian, the grand master of traditional Chinese painting, after he returned to Taiwan. It also served as the final spiritual garden of his lifetime.
The name "Moye" derives from Buddhist scriptures, symbolizing the boundless myriad forms and ever-changing realms of the universe. Constructed in the style of a two-story traditional Chinese courtyard house, every pavilion, pond, flower and stone across the garden was positioned upon Zhang Daqian’s personal decision. A brook winds around the front gate; wintersweets and pine trees are cultivated in the courtyard; the exotic stone Meiqiu, transported across oceans, stands in the backyard. After his passing, in accordance with his last will, he donated the entire mansion alongside all his collections. Managed subsequently by the National Palace Museum, Taipei, the site was officially renamed the Zhang Daqian Memorial Hall and opened permanently to the public, preserving the complete footprints of the master’s daily life and artistic creation.
Various custom writing brushes crafted exclusively by Kanders' Art are permanently displayed inside the painting studio where countless masterpieces were born. In his lifetime, Master Zhang once visited Kanders' Art Gallery and inscribed its name personally. He held repeated in-depth discussions with the chairman of Kanders' Art over the thickness of brush hair and the weight of brush handles, developing bespoke brushes tailored for his splash-ink landscapes and meticulous fine-line flower-and-bird paintings. Seated side by side at the painting desk, the two conversed extensively from raw material selection and handcrafted brush-making techniques to painting strokes, creative conception, oriental study aesthetics and artistic philosophy.
It was these tailor-made tools refined through their continuous exchanges that empowered the master to put brush to paper and create numerous iconic splash-ink, landscape and flower-and-bird works within Moye Jingshe. The custom brushes from Kanders' Art accompanied Zhang Daqian throughout all his late artistic years, forging an indelible artistic bond embedded within this former residence.
