Guan Ware Paper-Mallet Vase

A refined expression of literati taste.

Though finished in a single monochrome glaze, the vase possesses a remarkably strong presence when placed within an interior setting.

Its restrained form and quiet surface may appear simple at first glance, yet the balance of proportion, glaze, and silhouette reveals a far more sophisticated aesthetic.

Simple in appearance, but far from simple in ex*****on.

Guan Ware Begonia-Shaped Water Dish (Leizi)

A scholar’s object traditionally used when working with the five tonal gradations of ink.

This is an unusual form: although it appears to have been made as a complete vessel, it was intended to be used from what would normally be considered its reverse side.

Its function is especially familiar to practitioners of traditional Chinese painting.

Simply put, when painting in ink, a brush charged with concentrated ink must often be diluted with water to create softer tonal transitions and atmospheric washes in landscapes.

This small vessel served precisely that purpose — holding the water used to control and modulate the ink.

A modest object, yet essential to the subtle language of Song-dynasty ink painting.

Guan Ware Tripod Li-Form Censer

A refined example of Song ceramic aesthetics, inspired by the archaic bronze li form and supported on three legs.

Ge Ware Square Censer with Upright Double Handles and Four Feet

A quiet expression of the aesthetics of imperfection in Song ceramics.

The surface is covered with fine crackle, displaying the celebrated “golden threads and iron wires” effect, while the tall paired handles rise vertically from the body.

Compact in scale yet carefully conceived, this square censer is a charming example of the subtle ingenuity and understated beauty of Song design.

A small object, rich in thought and character.

Zhuangzi Dreaming of the Butterfly

“What occupies the mind by day may return in dreams by night.”

To rest one’s head upon books was to wish for enlightenment and wisdom.
To sleep upon a bronze pillow decorated with five oxen carried another kind of hope — for peace in the realm, favourable weather, abundant harvests, and prosperity among livestock.

The pillow culture of ancient China was therefore never merely about comfort. Many forms carried deeper symbolic meanings and auspicious wishes.

Bronze Oxen of the Ancient Dian Culture

In museums devoted to the ancient cultures of Yunnan, bronze oxen are among the most striking surviving images of the Dian world.

Groups of cattle could symbolize abundance and prosperity. In this example, two large-horned oxen stand prominently above a composition of three tigers and three oxen, creating a vivid scene that evokes the drama of the hunt.

Ancient Chinese bronzes can also be valued not only for their form and casting, but for the historical information preserved in their inscriptions.

Collectors sometimes joke that inscribed bronzes are “priced by the character” — even saying:

One character, NT$100,000.

Of course, that is best taken as an entertaining collectors’ saying over tea rather than a literal rule of valuation.

The “King of Tianhuang” in the Xifu Yaji Collection

This monumental piece of Shoushan Tianhuang stone weighs 4,530 grams.

During the Qing dynasty, the master carver Shang Jun worked only slightly more than half of the stone, deliberately leaving the remaining areas with their original natural skin intact.

Collectors familiar with black jadeite will understand the logic. When a dark jade plaque is polished completely smooth, it may look beautiful, but without any surviving natural skin it can sometimes be mistaken for a far less valuable material such as obsidian.

The same principle applies to a large, naturally formed piece of Tianhuang stone.

For this reason, a custom stand was made to support and display the carved face while preserving the untouched stone skin on the reverse.

The characteristic radish-like internal striations and reddish vein patterns of the Tianhuang were ingeniously incorporated into the composition, becoming trees and details within a layered mountain landscape.

The back remains entirely natural, preserving the original stone skin without carving.

This creates a notable contrast with the celebrated Rongbaozhai “King of Tianhuang”, weighing 4,275 g, whose surface is worked without a comparable area of preserved natural skin.

Mid-Qing Dynasty

High-Grade Antique Zisha Teapot

Decorated with bird-and-insect script, the inscriptions were individually hand-incised in seal script rather than impressed with a stamp.

Base mark: “Danranzhai” (澹然齋)

Constructed entirely by hand from six joined clay slabs, this is a fine example of traditional square-form Zisha craftsmanship.

Without having seen genuine examples, it is difficult to understand just how many questionable or imitation pieces are circulating in the market.

Over the years, we have visited the homes of many prominent collectors of tea and teapots. One of the most common surprises is to see an entire room filled with hundreds or even thousands of pots, yet hardly two that appear to be genuinely hand-built examples.

One important reason is the treatment of the base mark.

Many collectors do not realize that marks of this type were hand-carved in seal script. Instead, they compare them against reference books devoted to impressed seals. The result is predictable.

If the reference standard itself is wrong, an object may appear to match perfectly — while the collector has simply fallen into another trap.

If the author of a reference book genuinely did not know that the mark should be hand-incised, then misinformation may simply have been repeated from one generation of collectors to the next.

But if such information were knowingly distorted in order to promote or sell particular teapots, that would no longer be a matter of ignorance, but of deception — with potentially serious consequences.

Photographs of our imperial porcelains and court furniture have also appeared extensively on Taobao, Rakuten, and other online marketplaces, sometimes being used as promotional images to attract buyers. This has caused considerable difficulty for us.

For that reason, we are gradually producing short videos of the actual objects, introducing them correctly and allowing our friends and followers to study them directly.

When purchasing antiques online, develop the habit of verifying the actual object before payment whenever possible.

Do not jump simply because the price looks attractive.

Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng Period (1723–1735)

A Pair of Imperial Falangcai Enamelled Plates with a Rouge-Pink Ground

Today, we present a pair of imperial porcelain plates associated with the dining table of the Yongzheng Emperor.

According to traditional accounts of imperial dining, palace attendants responsible for testing the dishes would first ensure that the food was safe before it was served to the emperor and his consorts on porcelain of this calibre.

The delicate rouge-red and softly washed rose-pink tones have always held a particular appeal, especially for those drawn to elegant and refined colours. This matching pair is especially graceful and pleasing to the eye.

Spending time with exceptional and beautiful works of art is also one of the finest ways to cultivate and refine one’s own sense of aesthetics.
