|CJ STUDIO|

CJ Studio regards architecture and design as social events not simply as a creation of art. In other words, it is an entrance to the world as well as an end

less discovery. For this long-term discovery, every design project (whether big or small) is a precious experience, and every project is also new venture itself. Proprietors and users have to join this adventure to seek and create a new processing system, which is a simple form that is full of energy and potential. Through analyzing, integrating and rediscovering in every condition (environment, function, proprietor, foundation, historical background etc.), the order and geometrical relationship that lies beneath the real world can be found and the past can be connected with the future.

Due to the irregularity of the building design, there are some skewed lines in the interior, and the layout is not completely square, the designer uses geometry to cut out the space so that the layout can be operated in parallel.

Through simple materials and metal braiding, the sculptural space is hidden with detailed changes. The ceiling and walls are not made for modeling, and the corner lines are handled with a sense of flow to make them smooth and show the extended spatial scale, while the clean white atmosphere, in addition to white piano lacquer as part of the doors and cabinets, there are also materials such as wood and stone, which can reduce the texture too striking and maintain the overall consistent atmosphere.

Light Through Criss-crossed Volume of Void and Solid

The total area of the project was not enormous, but the house was not overloaded due to fewer inhabitants in the house that relatively required a simple program. The public space including a living room, kitchen, dining room as well as a guest room were arranged on the first floor. Meanwhile, the private bedroom and exterior balconies were organized on the second floor. In order to balance the sense of the space caused by the narrow proportion of the site, and intend to be more access to the green, the design that was based on the original structure adopted the concept of “Building Block”. Volumes were aligned obliquely that enabled more easily
the interior to extend to the exterior from time to time. In this way, it created a spatial rhythm and enhanced its spatial fluidity. With an abundant application of the glass, natural light could sufficiently diffuse into the interior which made it even more possible for the communication between the interior scene and the exterior green. For example, the dining room in the backyard that adopted the idea of “A Green House” was glazed in all surrounding walls and brought joy into the dining environment as if it were in the exterior garden.

Aesthetics of Simplicity

As for the exterior design, the light grey tile was selected as the main material for the facade finish. On one hand, it was a response towards the client’s expectation; moreover, it complementarily followed the green environment in the site. The tile matched perfectly with metal material in dark grey paints. The material combination was applied to entrance hall on the first floor, dining space in the backyard, and balconies on the second floor. It implicitly enriched visual effects in multiple layers that advocated a simple philosophy of keeping a low profile as well as being peaceful and natural.

United Hotel LOBBY & Slate Café

In the middle of Taipei’s fast-paced city life, the United Hotel Taipei, located right across from the Taipei Dome, offers a space where people can slow down. The design focuses on openness and flexibility, creating an environment that shifts throughout the day and responds to different ways people use the space.

The renovated ground floor is organized around a circular layout that breaks away from traditional spatial boundaries, creating a flexible, multifunctional social hub. Upon entering, the left side leads to an entrance hall featuring a sculptural spiral staircase that leads to the second floor restaurant, and continues into the reception lobby and front desk. On the right, Slate Café brings café, buffet, and bar, all seamlessly connected to the main lobby. This open-plan approach allows the space to adapt throughout the day—from breakfast in the morning, to coffee in the afternoon, and drinks in the evening—offering a variety of spatial experiences to suit different needs.

The design language is inspired by the idea of torn paper, which is reflected in the layered treatment of the ceilings and walls, giving the space a sense of movement and continuity. In the lobby, a wood ceiling adds warmth, balanced by terrazzo flooring and white marble walls to keep the overall feeling clean and modern. Around the reception and elevator areas, a collage-like approach mixes different textures and tones, creating subtle visual interest without feeling overwhelming.

On the other hand, the café and dining areas feel lighter and more relaxed. Beige stone, metal details, white ceilings, and touches of wood come together to create an “urban resort” atmosphere. Toward the back, the seating becomes softer and more lounge-like, with low sofas that make the space feel comfortable during the day and easy to transition into a sports bar in the evening, especially with the energy from events at the nearby Taipei Dome.

The furniture responds to varying functional needs through differences in form, color, and material, with many pieces custom-designed by the lead designer, Shi-Chieh Lu, ensuring a cohesive design language throughout the space. Lighting design plays a crucial role, with wall sconces and pendant lights carefully arranged to highlight the textures of natural materials, allowing light and shadow to become essential elements in shaping the atmosphere.

To the designer Shi-Chieh Lu, the hotel is more than just a place to stay. It’s a space that encourages people to reconnect with everyday life. From the lighting to the smallest furniture details, each element reflects a thoughtful approach to living. Together, they turn the hotel into something like a gallery, where guests don’t just pass through, but experience and appreciate the space in a more meaningful way.
