Textiles that carry the gesture of the hand into everyday spaces.

Through the Kendwa Series, Kukua explores batik not only as a decorative technique, but as a living artisanal practice rooted in patience, rhythm, and material knowledge.

Each piece reflects a collaborative process between artisans, designers, and makers β€” where traditional textile techniques are reinterpreted for contemporary interiors while preserving the human stories embedded within every layer of colour.

The Kendwa textiles are created through the batik technique, where wax is carefully applied to fabric before layers of dye reveal intricate patterns and colour compositions.

Developed in collaboration with artisan Eazy in Dar es Salaam, each textile emerged through an ongoing process of experimentation inside his home workshop β€” exploring motifs, tones, and textures inspired by everyday life and local culture.

These fabrics later become part of Kukua’s furniture collections through cushions handcrafted in Zanzibar by tailor Minja, carrying the work of many hands into a single object.

Kukua at Milano Design Week, MoscaPartners Variations 2026, Palazzo Litta.

In Crossing Light, design moves between places, materials, and meanings.

The Zanzibar Chair begins as a humble object β€” crafted from untreated branches by the Jisamwe Artisan Collective, rooted in local knowledge and environment.

Through reinterpretation, it transforms β€” cast in bronze, yet carrying the same spirit.

From vernacular object to sculptural form, it becomes a meditation on transformation:
how design travels, evolves, and preserves memory across contexts.

A story of material, gesture, and continuity.

With sincere thanks to for their support.

Glass Bridge is not only about the objects β€” but the people, the gestures, and the process behind them.

This film by documents the encounter between Murano glassmakers and Shanga artisans in Arusha β€” where knowledge moves, transforms, and takes new form.

A new step for Kukua, entering the territory of glass through collaboration, experimentation, and shared making.

More than a project β€” a human exchange.

At Milano Design Week, MoscaPartners Variations 2026, Kukua, alongside Emmanuel Babled presented Crossing Light at Palazzo Litta β€” an exploration of design as exchange.

Glass Bridge is where it becomes tangible.

A meeting between Murano master glassmakers and the Shanga workshop in Arusha, Tanzania β€” where centuries-old Venetian techniques encounter recycled glass and local ingenuity.

Tools, fire, and knowledge traveled across continents.

What emerges is more than a collection β€” it is a shared process, a bridge between traditions, and a new language of making.

For Kukua, this marks a new step β€” an opening into glass, expanding our commitment to craft, collaboration, and material exploration.

Documented through film and photography by , the project captures not just objects, but the human connections behind them.

With sincere thanks to for their support.

A moment from Glass Bridge at Rangi Gallery, Tanzania β€” where materials, techniques, and stories converge.

Presented during Italian Design Day, the exhibition brought together Murano glass mastery and the experimental, recycled approach of the Shanga Workshop in Arusha. Each piece reflects a shared process of learning, exchange, and making across continents.

The exhibition also featured the iconic Azoici Vases by Emmanuel Babled, created in collaboration with Master Andrea Zilio, further highlighting the dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression.

A dialogue shaped by fire, glass, and human connection.
