This is our neighbours’ garden, right in front of our home.

It used to be a beautiful garden with fruit trees. Now, after the drone attack, almost everything is burned.

The pear tree is still standing, but the tree itself is badly burned and most of the pears are half-burned too.
The plum tree was full of fruit. Now the fruit is gone, and the tree itself is dead.

Thankfully, the fire didn’t reach our house, so it wasn’t damaged by the flames like some of our neighbours’ homes. But the explosion waves severely damaged our house.

It’s strange to look at this garden now. These were just ordinary fruit trees, and then, in a few seconds, they’re gone.

We’re still collecting donations to restore our home. If you’d like to help, you can donate here:

Fantastic findings from Crimea, Ukraine.

Two pieces of woolen fabric. First fragment, dated to mid of V century: corrugated diamond weave fabric with attached pieces of leather, which may have been part of the loops for two big silver fibulas.

Probably, it was an ancestor of Kostrup aprondress from Denmark, which is also known by corrugated fabric (Viking ages).

Second piece dated to end of IV - first half of V century: simple tabby wool.

Our Viking Age headband is made entirely by hand from natural wool and naturally dyed.

It is available in wool, wool and silk, or wool and linen combinations, all made without synthetic fabrics.

Its narrow shape allows for different ways of wearing and tying it around the head and neck. It can be worn as a headband, headscarf, or simple head covering, or combined with another covering when you need a little extra support, warmth, or protection.

It is suitable for historical festivals, reenactment camps, living-history events, museum work, and everyday outfits with a historical influence.

Available to order through our Etsy shop — https://www.etsy.com/listing/1837184167/trim-roms-horns-handwoven-trim

The reconstruction follows archaeological evidence for narrow handwoven bands and scarves. Our main reference is the DHC Band/Scarfs, pp. 4–39, in Viking Age Headcoverings from Dublin by Elizabeth Wincott Heckett (2003).

My reconstruction is based on archaeological Ostrogoth finds from a 4th-century grave near Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine, associated with the Cherniakhiv archaeological culture. The Ostrogoths were an early Germanic tribe and part of the wider Gothic world.

Among the objects discovered in the grave were two silver fibulas, an elk-horn comb, two decorative shells, a needle, and a necklace made with blue glass and carnelian beads. The amulet included in the reconstruction is based on a similar find from another grave in Buhaivka.

To bring the archaeological finds together into a complete outfit, I added a simple tablet-woven belt and a natural-dyed indigo peplos made of 2/2 twill.

We’ve already shown you our reconstruction of the Bernuthsfeld Tunic, and today we’re taking a closer look at another historical garment: a female tunica worn in Late Antiquity, Roman, and early Byzantine contexts.

Recreated with a practical construction, this tunica can be worn with short sleeves or extended to full length, making it a versatile piece for different outfits and seasons.
The tunica is made from wool, linen, or h**p, with all visible parts stitched by hand.
Wool is available in both tabby and twill, while linen and h**p offer lightweight options.

You can order the tunic through our Etsy shop.
When ordering, you’ll also find a measurement form where you can provide your measurements, so we can make the tunic to your size.

Today, we’re going back to Roman Egypt to look at a child’s tunic dating to the 4th century AD.

Made from linen and wool and preserved by the dry desert climate, this garment has one particularly clever feature: it could grow with the child.

The horizontal folds at the waist could be released as she became taller, extending the length of the tunic.

This clever construction makes the piece especially interesting, showing how a small detail could make clothing adaptable to everyday needs.

This linen tunic is attributed to Louis IX, the French king known for organizing the 7th and 8th Crusades.

What makes this tunic especially fascinating is the quality of the textile. It was made from very fine linen with 27 warp threads and 31 weft threads, making it an extremely expensive item for the Middle Ages. Its exceptional quality even inspired a legend that it may have been a gift from Hasan-i Sabbah, the leader of the Assassins.

The construction is equally interesting. Only one sleeve is preserved, with a slightly rounded shape that tapers toward the wrist and a small gore sewn underneath. Two folding gores are also inserted into the front and back cuts, running from the waist to the bottom. The neckline is wide and waterdrop-shaped, with both the neckline and gores reinforced by canvas strips forming oblique crosses.

One of the biggest challenges with this piece is finding a reliable reconstruction scheme. Quality diagrams are surprisingly difficult to find, and some of the available ones have obvious discrepancies with the surviving evidence.

8 years of ECHO.

Through all the challenges we’ve faced, the ECHO team and I kept working, finding solutions, learning, creating, researching, packing orders, going to festivals and simply keeping things moving, even when I wanted to give up.

Over these 8 years, ECHO has been through quite a lot. There was COVID, the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, countless unexpected problems, changes, challenges, and now, damage to my family home. There have been plenty of moments when I had to stop, rethink everything, and figure out what to do next.

And I think that’s what these 8 years mean to me most. Not that everything went smoothly, but that we kept going anyway.

So, even if this isn’t quite the birthday celebration I originally imagined, I still want to say thank you.

Thank you to my friends, customers, fellow reenactors, festival friends, and everyone who has supported ECHO over these years.

Thank you for trusting our work, wearing our textiles, visiting us at festivals, sharing our posts, sending kind messages, and simply being here.

8 years is just the beginning 🌟
