Banana silk door mats are crafted from carefully processed banana fibres, resulting in a durable and eco-friendly home accessory. The fibres are extracted from banana stems, softened, spun, and woven into strong threads that produce a smooth, silk-like finish. The final mats are visually appealing, long-lasting, and naturally resistant to wear, making them suitable for everyday use. Their biodegradable nature and distinctive handmade character also make them a sustainable and stylish addition to modern homes.

Nyamba Primary School is taking a meaningful step in promoting health, dignity, and confidence among its learners through hands-on training in the production of reusable sanitary pads.

This initiative is made possible through the dedicated support of RSTC, with funding from grant partners such as Comic Relief.

Through this support, pupils are gaining practical, life-changing skills that enable them to manage menstrual hygiene safely, affordably, and with confidence. The initiative goes beyond skills-building. It helps to keep girls in school, reduce absenteeism, and break long-standing stigma around menstruation.

By equipping learners with the knowledge and tools to produce sanitary pads locally, Nyamba Primary School is fostering self-reliance, innovation, and a supportive school environment where every child can thrive.

With continued investment from partners and RSTC’s commitment on the ground, the school is shaping a brighter future, where education, care, and empowerment go hand in hand.

Yesterday, a team from the Rwenzori Sustainable Trade Centre (RSTC) visited the Bukonzo Bamboo Group to monitor the progress of the bamboo drying facility being constructed under RSTC’s financial support.

The visit focused on assessing the utilisation of funds and tracking the overall development of the project to ensure it aligns with the intended objectives.

As both a financing and technical partner, RSTC is playing a central role in this initiative, not only by providing the finances that has enabled construction, but also by equipping group members with the necessary skills training in bamboo processing and quality management.

During the visit, the team engaged closely with members, reviewed the construction progress, and offered practical guidance to strengthen implementation and ensure the facility meets required standards.

Beyond infrastructure and training, RSTC is also committed to linking the Bukonzo Bamboo Group to export markets, creating a clear pathway from production to sales. This integrated support is expected to significantly enhance the group’s processing capacity, improve product quality, and ultimately increase productivity and sustainable incomes for its members.

Under the Comic Relief Recovery Programme Grant implemented by RSTC, the Back-to-School Campaign is a key initiative supporting learners at Bulyambaghu Primary School and 11 other primary schools in the hardest-to-reach communities across the Rwenzori region under RSTC’s care.

Through this programme, essential scholastic materials, including books, stationery, and other learning resources, are being provided to pupils to strengthen their academic performance and enhance their overall learning experience.

This initiative not only creates a more conducive and inclusive learning environment but also advances the project’s broader goal of promoting equitable access to quality education in underserved areas. By reaching some of the most vulnerable communities, RSTC and Comic Relief are empowering learners, restoring dignity and opportunity, and laying the foundation for a brighter and more resilient future across the Rwenzori region.

Kisamba Women Group is celebrating Easter with joy, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose as members share profits generated through their collective effort and dedication. This milestone reflects the impact of RSTC’s Revolving Fund initiative and the VSLA recapitalisation support extended to women groups across the Rwenzori region.

Through these interventions, women have been able to strengthen their savings groups, expand small businesses, and improve household incomes. Beyond the financial gains, the initiative has fostered resilience, cooperation, and confidence among members. This Easter season therefore marks not only a time of reflection and celebration, but also a powerful testament to how targeted financial support and collective action can transform livelihoods and empower women in the Rwenzoris.

Women are central to the strength and resilience of families and communities, yet many still face limited access to the financial knowledge and resources needed to grow their incomes. Strengthening financial literacy and unlocking access to innovative funding opportunities enables women to invest in small businesses, participate in savings groups, and pursue income-generating activities that uplift their households.

Through the support of RSTC, women receive targeted training, mentorship, and access to financing that drives meaningful change. These initiatives build confidence, enhance decision-making, and enable women to develop sustainable livelihoods. When women are equipped to invest and grow, the impact extends beyond the individual, strengthening families, boosting local economies, and fostering more resilient communities.

The sensitisation meeting with the Mashyoro Women Group, organized by RSTC, marked an important step in preparing communities for the upcoming Community Health and Bereavement Scheme in the Rwenzori region. The session focused on introducing the concept of the scheme, highlighting the importance of good health practices, timely access to medical care, and collective support during times of illness and loss.

Members actively engaged in discussions, asking questions and sharing their experiences, which helped deepen their understanding of how the scheme will work and its benefits to their households. Through this engagement, RSTC is building awareness and laying the foundation for a community-driven system that will enhance health security and social protection across its supported groups.

Following last year’s aggressive tree planting campaign, the people of Katebwa are already experiencing encouraging progress in both their livelihoods and local environment. The trees are growing steadily and are now about shoulder height, signaling strong establishment and good care by the community.

While they are yet to provide shade or full yields, they are already contributing to improved soil health and represent a growing source of future benefits, including fruits and other household resources.

Importantly, the campaign has strengthened environmental awareness and fostered a sense of ownership among community members, with households actively engaged in nurturing and protecting the trees. Through this effort, RSTC is laying a solid foundation for long-term environmental restoration and more sustainable livelihoods in the floods prone Rwenzori Region.
