Sometimes the smallest pieces create the trickiest problems.

While building a miniature bookshelf, Eric needed to make extremely small cuts on the miter saw without having the tiny offcuts getting thrown around by the blade.

His solution was a simple L-shaped jig made from scrap plywood that helps contain the small pieces while he works.

It’s a little shop trick, but it’s also a good example of how Eric approaches projects in general: see the problem, make a solution, keep building.

And yes — all those tiny pieces became the miniature bookshelf at the end. 😂

Always follow your saw manufacturer’s safety instructions and keep hands clear of the blade.

Sometimes the best material has already lived another life.

About 10 years ago, Eric rescued these doors from the crawlspace of a historic Smyrna home. He didn’t have a project for them yet—he just knew they were worth saving.

Years later, he found the right place for them in our own house as sliding doors separating the living room from an adjoining schoolroom/home-office space.

The project became an exercise in adapting rather than forcing a predetermined plan. Eric reversed the original orientation of the doors because the heavier architectural detail worked better visually at the top, and that decision also helped him incorporate the additional 2¼ inches needed for the opening.

Then the finish evolved as he worked. As the old dark stain came away, the history and character underneath became part of the final design.

His comment during the process summed it up perfectly:

“Design is fluid.”

That combination of vision, problem-solving and respect for the material is one of our favorite parts of custom work.

Most people would see an abandoned shopping cart. Eric saw building materials. 😂

He found this one in a ditch, cut it down and turned part of it into a hay feeder for our goats that can hold a whole bale.

And apparently that wasn’t enough—the leftover pieces became a hay feeder for our herd of guinea pigs.

Little projects like this are such a good example of how Eric’s brain works: look at what already exists, figure out what the need is, and find a way to make it useful again.

“Saving America.” 😂

Ripping carpet out before putting down new flooring? Here’s one little trick that makes the prep MUCH easier.

We had nails left all around the edge of the concrete after removing the carpet and tack strips. Eric grabbed a long pry bar and was able to pop them out while staying on his feet instead of bending down for every single one. 🙌

We’re turning this room from carpet to LifeProof LVP, so more flooring tips are coming as we go!

This is exactly the kind of project Eric loves—the ones where the answer isn’t sitting on a shelf at the store.
This opening between a beautiful home theater and workout room needed two very large custom doors. Eric started by taking exact measurements, then made miniature versions with two different finishes so the homeowners could actually see their options before choosing.
After the full-size doors were built and installed, he had one more surprise. The homeowner collects guitars, and one particular well-loved guitar had caught Eric’s eye, so he made him a pen inspired by it as a thank-you.

This one-of-a-kind barn door is ready for a home!

We’re closing our retail booth after 11 years (more on that soon 🥹), and we’d really rather see this beauty hanging in someone’s home than move it back into storage!

Eric handcrafted this 43” x 84” knotty alder door, and it comes with everything you need—track and rollers, matching header, soft close, handle, floor guide and hardware.

One of my favorite things about watching Eric work is that he doesn’t see problems—he sees puzzles.

This hallway wasn’t designed for a standard barn door. The walls didn’t line up, so a regular header wouldn’t work.

Instead of saying it couldn’t be done, he designed a custom L-shaped header that turned the corner and made it work beautifully.

One of the homeowners even told us:

“Your sign says you can build anything for any kind of opening… and it’s true.”

Those are the kinds of projects we love.

Sometimes the first plan doesn’t work.

After our original approach failed, Eric had one more idea. We left the school for an entire week hoping we’d come back to corkboards that were still on the wall.

Thankfully… they were.

Problem-solving is one of our favorite parts of custom work because every project is a little different.
