This bin of fresh clay logs? That’s reclaim — and it’s one of my favorite parts of running a zero waste studio. ♻️
Reclaim is what happens to every scrap of clay that doesn’t make it. The collapsed bowl, the lopsided mug, the piece that just wasn’t feeling it that day. Instead of throwing it away, we collect every bit — trimmings, failed throws, leftover clay — and give it a second life.
Here’s how it works: all the scraps go into trash cans where we slake off the water and mix everything back together into a workable slip. From there it dries out in bins until it reaches the right consistency to pug. Then it goes through the pug mill — a machine that compresses the clay and forces out all the air — and out comes smooth, ready-to-throw logs just like the ones you see here.
And that’s why there is no such thing as a ruined project at Grit & Grog. 🙌 If it collapses on the wheel, it goes back in the bin. If you’re not happy with it before it’s fired, no problem — it gets reclaimed. The clay always gets another life.
We are committed to being a zero waste studio, and reclaim is a huge part of that. Clay is a natural material and not a single scrap should end up in a landfill. Every piece of clay that comes through this studio gets used, reused, and used again.
Pretty cool, right? 🏺
