It’s a chilly, grey day here in Northern Virginia and it feels like autumn, finally! After a whirlwind 5 days entertaining family for Mr Z’s promotion “weekend”, I’m enjoying the rain and slow pace of getting back into client projects.

Oh goodness, it’s officially the “-ber” months y’all— and I couldn’t be more tickled!

This month we are leaning into the layers of home - from adding character to new builds (or older homes without details) to the thoughtful ways to put antiques to work in your home as functional, livable pieces and whimsical details (see Purveyor Press | Quarterly Vintage + Antique Magazine Autumn online edition).

Oftentimes when the word "character" comes up, it can be mixed with "whimsy".
Character and whimsy are not the same.

Whimsy is an unexpected detail that makes you smile, usually decorative or easily changed. Character is more architectural detail with a permanent feel.

Whimsy can be an unusual lamp, a kitschy planter. A ridiculously little piece of art. A wallpaper pattern that is totally unexpected. Or a vintage find that makes no sense but somehow makes the room a little light-hearted.

Some of our favorite elements we've had in client's homes or our own include a tiny 2x3 piece of art from a photo taken on vacation. Framed and on display in a vignette, a D.C. themed George Washington wallpaper in a powder bath, a flamingo planter in a coral colored bathroom, and the tiny squirrel figurines that appear in our own home during fall (that's Mr. Z's decorative addition to fall 😉). Our earlier post on character was such a hit, that I'm diving more into character this fall!
I wanted to start the conversation about character that is decorator-friendly because character doesn't always require construction. Our August newsletter will also tease a bit more, and we've created a freebie for our subscribers "20 Ways to Add Character To Your Home" that will be available later this fall.

For now, let's look at some examples of decorative character that you can do in a weekend:
1. Change out standard lighting to something that speaks to you
2. Replace your generic hardware, especially door handles and cabinet hardware
3. Paint your trim. A room with walls and a door can handle different colored trim than the rest of your home.
4. Add window treatments. We love to layer a woven roller shade from Home Depot or Amazon, underneath drapery.
5. Introduce art to your walls. Bonus points if it's art you found while traveling or locally that really spoke to you!

Sometimes your house doesn't need a renovation, just a decorator's eye.
