This pictures in this article show there is incredible beauty in stark desolate landscapes where communities are struggling to survive in harsh conditions. The area along the Road of Bones was made famous by the Gulag.

The Kolyma Highway in the Russian Far East once delivered tens of thousands of prisoners to the work camps of Stalin’s gulag. The ruins of that cruel era are still visible today.

“Doctors say they are hampered not just by a lack of equipment and protective gear but also by a rigid, top-down governing system that discourages initiative and independent thinking. Medical workers who have spoken out have faced pressure from the authorities; three doctors who tangled with their superiors over working conditions fell from windows in recent weeks, though even the Alliance of Doctors, a medical-worker activist group highly critical of the government response, has described those as possible stress-related suicides, not homicides.”

Facing dire shortages of protective gear and amid fears that the worst is yet to come, more than 180 medical workers are reported to have fallen victim so far and thousands have been infected.

“Turgenev was so out of step with some of the conventions of his own country that “he never drank vodka and always preferred wine,” said Ms. Levina, the estate director.

But still, she added: “He was an extraordinary Russian writer. That is all that really matters.”

The Russian government celebrates the writer Ivan Turgenev even though it scorns many of his negative views of his homeland and his embrace of Western, liberal values.

Charles McCarry said that his 9 years as an undercover agent were often mundane, but he witnessed incredible moments like the erecting of the Berlin Wall and turned those experiences into imaginative spy fiction. Well done.

What Mr. McCarry learned as a Cold War C.I.A. operative served him well as a writer. His fiction was compared to John le Carré’s.

Remember the Rosenbergs? They really were spies, although probably executed in the Cold War fever taking hold at that time. Sobell, one of the other defendants was latter released and professed his innocence until 2008, so people can keep secrets for a long time. He not only betrayed his country but supporters around the world who believed him and his betrayal could of led to Soviet aggression in Korea.

Convicted in the Cold War spy trial that delivered Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to their deaths and divided the nation, he later admitted that he had been a spy.
