Clays is starting to take shape..

I’m beginning with a simple gourd and building his face using paper clay and molding paste—adding a little here, smoothing a little there, and letting his personality show up as I go.

No molds and no perfect plan. Just sculpting directly onto the gourd and seeing who emerges.

Part 1 of my paper clay Santa… check in to see what’s next.

This is how it goes… build a crow creature with a bottle gourd and stuff around the studio. Paper clay for sculpting. Paper mache cones…

We’re not saying you should buy something.

But it would be awkward if you didn’t.

This fabulous feline witchy oddball started life as a plain old large bottle gourd and clearly had bigger plans. Somewhere between the sculpting, painting, and muttering under my breath, another Halloween character showed up with a look that I can love.
And welcome my “Half Pints”… a mini weirdo collection of smaller Halloween vintage.

Meanwhile, today’s studio looks exactly like you’d expect this time of year—gourds everywhere, paint where it probably shouldn’t be, and little piles of rusty bits, sticks, wire, and forgotten treasures waiting to become somebody’s nose, hat, or feet. It’s organized chaos… emphasis on the chaos.

If you’re looking to give your fall décor a little more personality (and a lot less “big box store”), stick around. More strange little residents are making themselves at home every day. They’ll be for sale at Allentown Fall Festival (that’s New Jersey btw) October 10-11.

They’re multiplying by the day—Halloween characters with personalities of their own, glowing vintage luminaries, whimsical birdhouses, and a few Christmas friends already insisting it’s their turn.

If you love one-of-a-kind, handcrafted art with a touch of vintage charm, a dash of nature, and a healthy sense of humor, come wander into my booth. I promise you’ll meet a few characters who’ll make you smile.

Come say hello, peek at what’s new, and find the one that insists on coming home with you. FYI ….That’s Allentown New Jersey not Pa.

Did you know the gentlemen of the gourd patch always arrive first?

Before the female flowers even open, the male blossoms step onto the stage, bright and full of pollen, inviting bees and other pollinators to visit. They become the first feast of the season, teaching the pollinators exactly where to find breakfast.

Then, when the female flowers finally bloom—with their tiny baby gourd already waiting at the base—the pollinators know exactly where to go. They arrive carrying pollen from those faithful early gentlemen, giving the female flowers everything they need to begin growing the gourds we love.

I like to think of it as one of nature’s sweetest acts of chivalry. The male flowers show up early, do the welcoming, attract the guests, and make sure everything is ready before the ladies make their entrance.

Nature has its own quiet love stories…
