The car sped down the highway, tossing a tied-up blue sack into the ditch like it was garbage.
But the farmer working the field nearby saw the bag move.
Levi, 32, was checking the fence line on the edge of his family's property.
The busy interstate cuts right through their farmland, a loud reminder of the modern world rushing by.
He’s used to people throwing litter from their windows, but this time, he saw a sedan slow down, hurl a heavy blue bag onto the shoulder, and speed off.
Levi waded through the tall grass, intending to clean up the mess.
But as he reached for the plastic, he heard a soft, pained whimper.
His heart dropped. He frantically ripped open the blue sack.
Inside wasn't trash.
It was a golden retriever puppy, shaking violently and terrified.
The little dog had been trapped in the dark, tossed out at 60 miles per hour, and left to suffocate.
Levi, a man of gentle patience who has raised animals all his life, didn't care about the mud or the cars zooming past.
He sat right down in the ditch and scooped the trembling bundle into his arms.
"You're alright, little fella," he murmured, his voice calm and steady against the roar of the traffic. "We got you now."
The driver who had stopped to check on the situation found them just like this.
Levi wasn't angry; he was just focused on saving a life.
He carried the puppy back to the farmhouse, where warm milk and a soft blanket were waiting.
The dog that was thrown away like garbage is now the most beloved member of a family that wastes nothing, especially not a life.
