Whether you're prepping to sell or just tired of walking past a door that doesn't excite you, these 15 designer-approved moves are the shortcut to a front entry that looks like it belongs in a magazine.

Your front door is doing more heavy lifting than you think. It sets the tone before a single guest steps inside, and a few smart, low-cost updates can take it from builder-basic to genuinely stunning.

We're talking a high-gloss coat of navy or forest green. Matching all your hardware to one finish. Oversized lanterns that finally feel proportional to the space. Symmetrical planters that say "someone lives here who has taste."

The best part? Most of these tricks take a weekend or less, and none of them require a contractor.

You are not trying to predict every future problem. You are deciding which backups are useful enough to justify the space they occupy now. The more replaceable something is, the stronger the reason should be for storing it. That one filter can clear space without forcing you into all-or-nothing decluttering.

Almost anything can be kept if the question is, “Could I ever need this?” That question has no limit.

A better test is to look at probability and replacement.
How likely are you to need this item in the next year? If the need did happen, would replacing it be difficult, expensive, specific, or time-sensitive?

A spare key, a specialty part, or a backup for something used every day may deserve its space.
A common item that is easy to replace and has not been needed for years may not. This approach turns “just in case” from a vague feeling into a practical decision.

Great advice!

One flooring tip I will always stand by: never choose a sample based only on how it looks under store lighting.

Bring it into the room where it will actually live. Put it next to the cabinets, furniture, wall color, and trim. Then look at it in the morning, afternoon, and evening. A flooring color can look completely different once it is surrounded by everything else in your home.
