Kuhn Riddle Architects

Kuhn Riddle Architects Architecture +Master Planning +Interior Design KUHN RIDDLE ARCHITECTS is a studio of fifteen people located in the center of Amherst, Massachusetts.

Since 1977, we have provided architecture, master planning, and interior design services to a diverse range of clients throughout the Pioneer Valley and beyond. Project types include: college and school facilities, custom homes, multi-family communities, offices, retail stores, public buildings and worship spaces. Our work encompasses both new construction and renovation. We are not a large firm,

but we aren't small either; no firm in Western Massachusetts employs more licensed architects, and four of us are LEED® APs. For KRA, design and construction are collaborative processes that succeed when all stakeholders work together and have ownership of the finished product. By listening closely to our clients, we are able to create sustainable buildings and spaces that both integrate with and enhance their context.

We’re proud to share that Lindsay Schnarr recently completed the required coursework and exams to earn her Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) credential! Lindsay joins Brad Hutchison, Thom Barry, Ruoqi (Rosy) Zhong, and Garrison Piers-Gamble, bringing the number of Certified Passive House Consultants on the KR team to five.

As communities across our region face an urgent need for housing, this expertise is increasingly important. In Massachusetts communities that have adopted the Specialized Energy Code, new multifamily buildings of 12,000 square feet or more are required to meet Passive House standards.

Certified Passive House Consultants receive specialized training in the design and coordination of high-performance building envelopes, including exterior wall and roof assemblies, windows, continuous insulation, and air barriers. Their whole-building approach integrates these components with ventilation and mechanical systems to reduce energy use and improve indoor air quality, comfort, and long-term durability.

KR is actively working on multifamily projects in Amherst, Northampton, and Easthampton that will require Passive House certification. These projects demonstrate how Passive House principles can support energy-efficient, comfortable, and durable housing while addressing the practical needs of residents, owners, and communities.

This knowledge also informs our private residential, commercial, institutional, and civic work. Having five consultants on staff strengthens our ability to carry high-performance goals from design through construction across projects of many types and scales.

We look forward to continuing to build on this expertise as we design for the evolving needs of our region!

Easthampton’s historic Old Town Hall is one step closer to becoming a fully accessible center for arts, culture, and community life!

The CitySpace restoration recently received $3.5 million in federal funding to support the continued transformation of this important local landmark, including a new accessible entrance and second-floor performance space.

“Two of the greatest assets in Western Mass. are beautiful old buildings and community-minded nonprofits. Pairing the two is really a win-win situation,” shared Andrew Bagge, Senior Architect at Kuhn Riddle Architects & Designers.

A view from above during construction at the Emily Dickinson Homestead in Amherst. This in-kind cedar roof replacement was carefully designed to preserve the historic appearance and character of the property while improving the roof’s long-term durability.

The work required close attention to the Homestead’s historic materials and architectural details, including its cedar shingles, chimneys, cupola, flashing, gutters, and surrounding building fabric.

We’re grateful to be part of preserving this important piece of Amherst history for generations to come!

This complete renovation brings new life to the Armour Building, introducing a modern office space, a future restaurant, and an accessible terrace set to anchor the dining experience.

Original brickwork and painted signage were preserved and celebrated, with thoughtful interior updates layered in to support the building’s next chapter.

Rooted in place, open to possibility!

A study of a compact ADU centered on accessibility, efficiency, and long-term livability.

Organized on a simple, single-level plan, the design maximizes daylight, open living space, and direct connections to the outdoors within a modest footprint.

Also illustrated here: our AIA 2030 commitment to energy modeling which we can be used to evaluate performance. We are proud to stand with the actionable climate strategy aiming to reach net zero emissions in the built environment!
