Mail Monday

A Classic beauty Trunk size Beginner Friendly Top Whorl Drop Spindle I made found its home.
I turned the shaft from Maple and whorl from Black Walnut then shaped the hook from Bronze wire.

Wood Wednesday Black Walnut

There are a few woods that I keep reaching for with every batch and every type of tool I turn. Black Walnut holds top spot for my use.

Why you ask? The rich brown color of Black Walnut makes it very popular with you my customers. As a result I always need to make more spindles and all my tools in Black Walnut to restock. It also is one of my favorite woods to turn.

I managed to have over two pages of Black Walnut tools on my website right now. Given that I make all three sizes of both my spindle types in it and spindle sets... one of everything adds up fast.

Mail Monday

I mailed this Branch size Top Whorl Drop Spindle a while ago. Finally remembering to share it with you.

I turned the whorl from Dogwood and shaft from Cherry.

Heads Up

There is NO Clotho's Handspinners meeting tomorrow August 15th.
The guild's meeting location is taken over by a dance event. They are meeting the following Saturday. I am already busy so will be missing August. Sorry for getting your hopes up when I sent my last newsletter.

Tool Thursday

Plying Balls may seem like an odd sort of tool. However having a little firm felt ball to use as a core makes winding a plying ball much easier.

Plying balls are the key to easy plying on a spindle. Wood Wednesday Cherry

Made with wood from a Cherry tree Prunus serotina. At times called Black Cherry or Wild Cherry it grows through out the woods of Virginia and much of the Eastern United States. It produces edible cherries, small and very tart. I prize cherry for its lumber and the rich red brown color it provides. Most people recognize the dark color that develops after sun exposure and time. However freshly cut cherry is very pale. Most product pictures are taken before the cherry has a chance to darken.
The bowl I let age then took more photos. The top whorl drop spindle set is only slightly aged. It will continue to darken.

Both this bowl and spindle set have a little natural sapwood that provides a lighter contrast. The sapwood will not darken like the heartwood so the contrast will last.

Tip Tuesday

Be prepared, carry a spindle bag loaded with your spindle and fiber.

You will be surprised how often you can spin for a few minutes. You will also notice how great it is to have your spindle ready for stress reduction.
