It’s Market time! I’m up bright and early, making myself get on East Coast time.

Twice a year I fly from Anchorage to High Point to sit on sofas, open drawers, and meet the people who make what goes into my clients’ homes. Swipe to get a sense of why love coming to market. ✈️

What you won’t see here (or in my stories the next 5 days), is that I’m talking to my vendors about lead times, shipping standards and upgrade options that making freighting their products all the way to Alaska or Hawaii worth the trip. Designing is what everyone sees, but this knowledge makes it all come together beautifully.

Time to get ready! I have showroom appointments early this morning.

My mom wanted to see more photos of this room. 🥰 She also asked to see the before pictures. (Swipe to the end.) Of course I had to pull together this post.

When my clients bought this house, they knew they didn’t need a formal living room. They wanted some bookshelves and the piano and I took it from there.

We did it in two phases. The family was growing, so the first phase was the soft stuff: American-made upholstery in performance fabric (because kids), a pair of cubes that go wherever they’re needed, and drapery with a modern pattern that pulls every color in the room together.

Once life settled a bit for them, we brought in the big moment. Custom built-ins with a window seat right under those tall windows, so the birches became part of the room. A local craftsman built them and a local painter gave them that fresh green.

Before it was just an empty room that nobody used, now the family is in there every day. Books for all ages, and cabinets & drawers for storing toys and cozy blankets.

A sunny room that’s ready for real life and greeting visitors.

When I first walked into this Anchorage cottage, the personality was already there. A Dall sheep over the window seat. An Eames lounge chair in the middle of the room. A ukulele on the window cabinet.

The room was furnished, but it wasn’t finished.

The best pieces in this room were already his, so nothing he loved was taken out.

I brought in a golden velvet sofa for comfy Alaska evenings, navy drapery to balance the stone, forest-print ottomans by the fire, and a boombox pillow, because a room this personal can handle a little humor.

Then his pieces went back in, where they’d get used every day. The ukulele came out of its case and onto a stand beside his radio and books. His taxidermy friends stayed put, too.

A truly finished room tells you who lives there.

Market passes have arrived. 🎟️
Flight to North Carolina booked. ✈️
Here's what I actually do at market.

Twice a year I'm at High Point Market sitting in the sofas, pulling the cushions, opening drawers, and taking notes. I'm vetting new vendors and reconnecting with longtime partners.

That's the part of design that's hard to photograph, but it's why the after photo looks the way it does.

Design is just a wishlist until every piece arrives in Alaska and is placed exactly where it belongs.

After 2 days at the Ballerina Kitchen showroom and factory, I’m officially a fan.

What impressed me most was the range. Finishes, textures, integrated lighting, standard colors or custom. There’s Smart glass you can actually drill into without worry, and surfaces that resist fingerprints. And every system is thought through down to the last part.

Then there is the hardware: all the drawer slides, hinges, etc are from Blum. If you know, you know! A cabinet can look gorgeous on day one, but without high quality hinges and heavy duty drawer slides it’s not going to last and it’ll drive you crazy until you replace it.

I’ve seen how it’s made and put my hands on the details. Kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, closets: if you want it done well, send me a message.

This room started out perfectly functional, but my client wanted more than “fine.” He knew something was missing and he didn’t feel truly settled in his home yet.

I was happy to help. ☺️

We layered in warmth, texture, and pieces with a little weight to them. Thoughtful choices that make the room feel calm and comforting at the end of any day.

Every project is different. Every client. Every room.

Sometimes the most important design goal is to make you exhale when you walk in.

Yep, that’s me, sitting with the cool kids.🤓

When I was asked to participate on this panel, I said I was flattered and terrified.

I’m mostly trying not to think about it, but when I do, I remind myself how much I love the design community. Every time I show up, I’m met with kindness, generosity, and real camaraderie. People who lift me up, inspire me, and help me work through the bumpy stuff.

I’ll 100% be nervous, but I’m an Alaskan, so that’s kind of a superpower. IYKYK

The Vacation Rental Design Summit is full of my people, and I’m honored to be part of this conversation and to learn even more about luxury vacation rental design.
