One of the things I love most about collecting antique artwork is discovering portraits and studies of people whose stories might otherwise have been lost to time.

This sweet pastel portrait, likely many decades old, immediately captured my attention. The expression, the composition, and the tenderness with which the artist depicted this young girl suggest affection, dignity, and care. Whoever created this piece clearly saw her as the subject worth celebrating.

As a student of art history, I’ve always been drawn to works that reflect a broader range of human experiences. Historically, portraits of Black, Indigenous, Latino, and other underrepresented communities are far less common in the antique art market than portraits of white European subjects. Finding these works is meaningful because they help preserve stories and faces that were too often overlooked.

This piece is available at Finch & Fern, and we are honored to help preserve and share it with a new generation.
