Turns out, changing careers doesn’t mean starting from scratch.

I spent nearly 20 years building a career in retail, and while I was ready for something different, there’s a whole lot from those years that I’m grateful to have brought with me.

Some lessons worth keeping. Some worth leaving behind. And plenty I’m still putting to use as we grow Sawdust & Clay.

Tomorrow’s Studio Builder is about The Things I Brought With Me.

When I left my corporate career, I thought leadership was one of the things I was leaving behind.
Now I'm not so sure.
I think what wore me down wasn't simply being responsible for people. It was being responsible for asking people to accomplish things I didn't always get to choose—and sometimes didn't entirely believe in.
Building my own business hasn't eliminated hard goals, difficult feedback or the responsibility that comes with leading people.
But it has changed something important:
If I ask something difficult of someone, I have to be able to stand behind why I'm asking it.
I've been thinking about what that means as Sawdust & Clay grows.
That's where we're going in this week's Studio Builder.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.
When I left a nearly 20-year career in retail, I thought I was leaving leadership behind too. I wanted to make things. Work with my hands. Build a creative life that looked completely different from the one I had just left.
And for a while, that's exactly what I did.
Then the business grew.
We started bringing other artists into it. I started training people, planning their work, setting expectations, giving feedback and thinking about how to create an environment where people could do good work.
Somewhere along the way, I became a leader again.
The strange part is that it doesn't feel the way it did before.
I've been trying to understand why.

Sometimes being a better business owner means knowing when you’re standing a little too close to the work.

This week’s Studio Builder is about customer service, creative work, and what happens when the two get personal.
