Every Table Has a Story. This One Is Ours. — Part 4

Around that same time, God brought another blessing into my life.

My childhood friend from Puerto Rico, Miguel Polo, reached out after seeing my work online. I had no idea he owned a woodworking shop.

“Jay, I see what you’re doing. Anything you need, I’m here for you.”

Instead of simply answering my questions, he invited me to Puerto Rico. I spent a week in his shop learning from him, and his generosity, knowledge and encouragement gave me confidence as I transitioned into woodworking full-time.

Looking back, I can see God’s fingerprints all over this journey.

The right people. The right opportunities. The right timing.

From our garage, to our first shop, to the shop we have today.

It hasn’t always been easy. We’ve made mistakes, started over and learned things the hard way.

But God has been faithful.

And so have so many of you.

To every customer who trusted us before we had the experience, tools or portfolio we have today… thank you.

You are part of the Nye Woodworks story.

Because this has never been just about furniture.

We pray over every piece that leaves our shop.

We ask God to bless the home receiving it. When it’s a table, we pray for the conversations, meals, birthdays, holidays and ordinary dinners that will happen around it.

We pray that what we build with our hands will be a blessing to the family who receives it.

Sometimes I think back to that first farmhouse table—the one I built simply because I wanted to make my wife happy.

That table taught us to dream.

One table.
One garage.
One simple decision.

God used something ordinary to begin something extraordinary.

Ten years later, we’re still building, still learning, still dreaming—and still incredibly grateful.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” — Psalm 127:1

This is our story.

And by God’s grace, we can’t wait to see what He builds in the next chapter.

Every Table Has a Story. This One Is Ours. — Part 3

For those who have ever wondered where NYE came from…

It’s actually my middle name.

At the time, I was working full-time as a Cafeteria Manager for Arlington ISD, and woodworking had become my second job.

For about three years, I did both.

During the last year and a half, I would work from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the school district, come home, walk into the garage around 4:00 PM, and work until midnight—sometimes 1:00 in the morning.

Six days a week.

For a year and a half.

It wasn’t glamorous.

There were long days, late nights, mistakes and a lot of learning.

But every project taught me something.

Every customer gave us another opportunity.

Every challenge pushed me to become better.

Eventually, we were booked four to six months in advance.

That’s when I knew I had a decision to make.

Stay where life felt comfortable…

Or trust that God was opening another door.

Leaving a steady paycheck wasn’t easy.

But I couldn’t ignore what God was doing.

So I stepped away from my full-time job and took the leap.

Sometimes the next chapter begins with a leap of faith.

Every Table Has a Story. This One Is Ours. — Part 2

About two weeks later, that entrepreneurial side of me—the same one that had led me to own a food business in Puerto Rico years before—started thinking.

I looked at Arlene and said,

“What if we sell it?”

Her answer was pretty clear:

“Please, Jay… don’t do it.”

But after some convincing, we came to an agreement, and I listed it on OfferUp.

The very next day, a lady came to our house to buy it—the farmhouse table, four vintage chairs and a bench.

I’ll never forget her reaction.

She saw the table, literally laid across it, smiled from ear to ear and said,

“Oh my goodness… I absolutely love this table!”

I remember thinking,

“Really? It’s cute… but it’s not THAT cute.”

All I could see were the imperfections.

She saw something completely different.

She happily took it home.

And just like that… we didn’t have a dining table anymore.

But something had started.

So I built a headboard.

We listed it.

It sold.

Then came another project. And another. And another.

Arlene started posting our work in the Arlington Moms Buy & Sell Facebook group, and little by little, people started reaching out.

Then more people.

Then even more.

Without realizing it, a business was quietly being born.

Nye Woodworks.

We had no idea how far it would go.

Every Table Has a Story. This One Is Ours. — Part 1

If you had told me in 2016 that one day I would own a woodworking business, I probably would have laughed.

Woodworking wasn’t my passion or my hobby. In fact, anyone who knew me back then knows I wasn’t exactly the “handyman” type.

For nearly 20 years, my life revolved around the food industry. Building furniture wasn’t even on my radar.

Then one simple conversation changed everything.

My wife, Arlene, wanted a farmhouse table for our home. We looked everywhere, but the tables we found were expensive, smaller than we wanted, and the quality just wasn’t there.

One day I looked at her and said,

“I’ll build you one.”

Her reaction was pretty much…

“Really?”

And honestly, I don’t blame her.

I had never built furniture before. I wasn’t a carpenter. I was simply a husband who wanted to build something that would make his wife happy.

There was no business plan. No dream of owning a woodworking company. I just wanted to give Arlene the table she wanted.

So I bought some lumber, watched videos, made plenty of mistakes, started over more than once, and eventually built our first farmhouse table in our garage.

Looking at it today, I can point out every flaw.

Definitely DIY.

Nothing close to what we build today.

But Arlene loved it.

And somehow, that simple table made us begin to see beyond what was right in front of us.

We didn’t know it then, but it would become the beginning of so much more.

It was the first piece that made us wonder if maybe we could dream a little bigger.

And that was only the beginning.
