Most path lights are added next to walkways and steps.

These aren't.

For this project, we installed core-drilled path lights directly into the stone landing and steps.

The result is subtle, clean, and highly effective.
✔ No visible fixtures cluttering the hardscape
✔ Improved safety on steps and elevation changes
✔ Light exactly where it's needed
✔ A refined look that blends into the architecture

It's one of those details many people don't notice at first—but it makes a significant difference in how the space looks and functions after dark.

Good lighting isn't always about adding more fixtures.

Sometimes it's about making the fixtures disappear.

Save $2,000. Spend $8,000 later.

This fixture was designed to sit in the ground and shine up onto a home or tree.
Instead, it was mounted high on the front of the house and used as a downlight.

The result?

Water collects inside the fixture.

The lamp fails.

And now replacing it requires getting access to the highest point of the home.

This is one of the most common problems we see with inexpensive landscape lighting systems and inexperienced installers.

Outdoor lighting isn't just about putting fixtures wherever light is needed. Every fixture is designed for a specific purpose, mounting location, and environment.

When the wrong fixture is used, the problems may not show up immediately—but they almost always show up eventually.

Sometimes the cheapest lighting system becomes the most expensive one.

We laughed a little too hard at this one.

If you've ever started a project thinking, "I'll just run to Home Depot real quick," you already know where this story is headed.

The funny thing is that lighting is one of those projects that seems simple until you're standing in the aisle comparing color temperatures, brightness levels, fixture sizes, and wondering why there are 47 different options that all look the same.

Outdoor lighting is no different. The fixtures are only one piece of the puzzle. Design, placement, beam spreads, controls, and color temperature all play a role in how the finished project looks and feels.

That's why we spend so much time planning before installation begins.

Good lighting starts with good design.

And hopefully fewer than 17 trips to the store. 😄

FORT BEND, IN — After picking up a new pack of bulbs for the kitchen light fixture, local man Kyle Stephens was just 17 more trips to Home Depot away from having the correct light bulbs.

Luxury outdoor lighting is subtle, and that’s exactly the point.

The best outdoor lighting doesn’t draw attention to the fixtures. It draws attention to the home.

Most homeowners never think about this, but if your home is held in a trust, your outdoor lighting contract matters more than you might realize.

When we work on a property, we make sure contracts properly reflect ownership and authorization details when a trust is involved.

Why?
Because if work is performed on a property without the proper documentation and something unexpected happens, it can create unnecessary complications with insurance coverage and liability.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes details many contractors overlook.

But protecting our clients is part of our job.

At Loudoun Lighting, thoughtful design is only part of the process. We also believe in being thorough, professional, and proactive from the very beginning.

Thinking about bistro lighting? Here’s what most people don’t realize.

It’s not just about stringing lights across a space.

The biggest issues we see:
• Lights hung too low
• Poor tension → sagging over time
• No plan for maintenance
• Unsupported spans that fail in weather

For this home in Belmont Country Club in Ashburn, we approached it differently.

Every detail was considered—from layout and height clearance to long-term durability and ease of use.

✔ Custom V-shaped design for balanced coverage
✔ Steel support pole set in concrete (not a retail kit)
✔ Proper height to clear the deck and umbrella
✔ Built-in adjustability for maintenance
✔ Smart control, independent from landscape lighting

The result isn’t just better lighting—it’s a system that holds up over time.

If you’re planning bistro lighting, the difference isn’t the bulbs—it’s the design behind them.

One of the most overlooked parts of outdoor lighting design is what happens at the edge of the property.

For this McLean project, we illuminated a strip of trees along the rear property line, not to flood the yard with harsh light, but to create subtle visibility, depth, and peace of mind after dark.

Thoughtful perimeter lighting helps reduce dark zones, improve visibility, and create a stronger sense of comfort throughout the property without making the landscape feel overlit.

Good security lighting should feel intentional and integrated into the landscape, not harsh or commercial.

At Loudoun Lighting, we approach security lighting the same way we approach every project: balancing safety, aesthetics, and restraint.

If you’re considering outdoor lighting for your home, we’d be happy to walk your property and discuss a custom design approach.

One of the biggest mistakes we see with colonial home lighting?

Too much light.

Colonial architecture is built around balance, proportion, and symmetry. When outdoor lighting becomes overly bright or overly aggressive, it starts competing with the home instead of enhancing it.

That’s why thoughtful outdoor lighting design isn’t really about fixtures — it’s about layering.

In this video, we break down:
• Why restraint matters
• How layered lighting creates a more refined look
• The role of path lighting, moonlighting, architectural lighting, and entry lighting
• Why every property requires a custom approach

And while symmetry is often important, good design also responds to the landscape itself. A curved walkway, mature trees, or existing site lines may call for asymmetrical lighting placement to create the most natural overall result.

Because great lighting should feel intentional—not obvious.
