LED modernization can be a way to update an existing system while continuing to use the lighting infrastructure that's already in place.

Depending on the project, modernization may involve replacing older fixtures with LED fixtures, updating components, or making other improvements to bring an existing system up to current standards.

The important part is not letting an existing system become neglected. Regular attention can help keep outdoor lighting performing as it should and give you an opportunity to improve the system as your property and lighting needs change.

𝗪𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝟰𝟬𝟬𝟬𝗞?

For most residential gardens, Garrett typically prefers warm white light in the 2700K–3000K range. It complements foliage, natural stone, wood, and residential architecture while creating a comfortable atmosphere after dark.

But good lighting design isn't about applying the same rule everywhere.

𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

When fixtures are positioned high within mature trees, a cooler light source can help suggest the appearance of natural moonlight filtering down through the canopy. Pair that with warmer landscape lighting closer to the ground, and the subtle contrast can make the effect feel even more convincing.

As Garrett puts it:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦. 𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.

Several months after we installed architectural lighting at a 70-acre property in Marshall, VA, the homeowner called because part of the system had stopped working.

When we investigated, we found the real culprit: a large burrow under the front porch—and lighting cables that had been chewed through.

We repaired the wiring and added flexible protective tubing around the replacement cable. The homeowner also filled the burrow with heavy rocks and gravel.

But apparently, this particular resident had other plans.

The gopher pushed the rocks back out, moved back in and damaged the wiring again.

Eventually, wildlife control had to remove the repeat offender before we could make the lighting repair permanent.

It’s a funny story, but it also illustrates why diagnosing an outdoor-lighting failure matters. A dark section of landscape lighting isn't always a bad fixture or transformer. Wiring can be damaged by animals, landscaping work, water intrusion and other problems that aren't immediately visible.

Sometimes the solution requires the lighting professional to fix the system—and another professional to deal with what caused the damage in the first place.

A McLean custom home we helped bring to life is now featured in LUKA Design & Build’s project gallery—and the completed home includes the outdoor lighting we designed and installed.

We joined the project near the end of construction, but early enough to recommend installing essential conduits before the driveway was poured. That one decision preserved the necessary wiring routes and avoided what could have become a costly retrofit.

The homeowners ultimately selected an Alliance Bluetooth color-changing system, giving them warm everyday lighting, the option to add color for special occasions, and convenient control from their phones.

They later brought us back to add backyard focal-point lighting that they could enjoy from both outside and inside the home.
