Today was a meaningful one for our team as we celebrated the groundbreaking of the new ABCCM Veterans Restoration Quarters (VRQ).

For us, this project is about so much more than architecture. After Hurricane Helene, so many of the veterans served by ABCCM lost their homes, belongings, and sense of stability. Since the storm hit, our team has been working tirelessly alongside the ABCCM VRQ team to help create a new VRQ that will continue their mission of providing dignity, stability, and a path forward for veterans in our community.

It was especially meaningful to have so much of our team there today: Brad Adams, Project Manager; Jen Layer, Architectural Designer and lead in creating our project renderings; Joyce Martin, Architectural Designer and a key part of the project’s design and details since December 2024; and Wendy Legerton, Principal and Owner, and Jen McMahon, Director of Operations.

We are incredibly proud of the work this team has poured into this project, and even more grateful to be part of something that will have such a lasting impact on our community.

Today marks the beginning of building something new from what was lost. We can’t wait to see the new VRQ come to life. ❤️

🌿Designed with intention. Built for connection.🌿

This new custom residence in Asheville's River Arts District is centered around the idea of connection to the outdoors, natural light, and the people who gather within it.

The defining feature is an expansive retractable glass wall that opens with the push of a button or can be operated manually, transforming the main living space into an extension of the covered patio. With the glass fully opened, the transition between inside and outside nearly disappears, creating one continuous space for entertaining, relaxing, and taking in the surrounding landscape.

Just beyond, a dramatic opening in the roof brings daylight into the covered terrace while framing the sky above. Positioned over the fire pit, it creates a unique outdoor room where sunlight warms the space by day and the stars become part of the experience at night.

From the warm wood soffits and clean horizontal rooflines to the dark exterior cladding and expansive glazing, every element was carefully considered to create a home that feels modern, welcoming, and deeply rooted in its setting.

At Legerton Architecture, we believe exceptional design is about more than aesthetics, it's about creating places that enrich the way people live. This home is a reflection of that philosophy, where thoughtful details turn everyday moments into memorable experiences.

Intern Spotlight ✨

This summer, we had the privilege of welcoming Quinn to the Legerton Architecture team. From exploring conceptual designs for a new pavilion at Warren Wilson College, to documenting our completed projects through photography, to sitting in on client meetings and helping our team capture ideas and next steps, Quinn embraced every experience with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. She asked great questions, shared fresh perspectives, and reminded us that learning is one of the most important parts of the design process.

Architecture is more than just creating buildings. It's about creating places that tell stories, strengthen communities, and connect people. Watching Quinn discover how thoughtful design can breathe new life into existing spaces and shape new ones has been incredibly rewarding.

Quinn, thank you for sharing your summer with us. Your positive spirit, willingness to jump in wherever needed, and passion for creating meaningful places made a lasting impact on our team. We are so excited to see where your journey takes you and can't wait to watch you shine during your senior year.

We know this is only the beginning, and we're grateful to have been a small part of your story. Wishing you an incredible senior year and all the success that lies ahead.

One of our favorite parts of the design process is seeing ideas become reality. 🖌🏠

This custom home in Barnardsville, NC is taking shape, and framing is well underway. It's exciting to watch the spaces we've envisioned begin to emerge, giving a first glimpse of how this home will live within this beautiful mountain setting.

Every project is the result of incredible collaboration between our clients, consultants, and builders, and we're grateful to be part of the journey from the very beginning. We can't wait to share what's next as this home continues to grow!

For more than 20 years, Legerton Architecture and Sitework Studios have had the privilege of working together to create places that strengthen our communities. This week, we traded job sites and project meetings for a delicious lunch, a tour of Sitework Studios’ beautiful office, and some great conversations.

It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time together, learn more about one another, share a few laughs, and celebrate the partnership we’ve built over the years. The best collaborations are built on strong relationships, and we’re grateful to work alongside a team that shares our passion for thoughtful design and serving our clients.

Today, members of the Legerton Architecture team had the pleasure of attending the Rise and Thrive event as proud sponsors and community partners, alongside our founder, John Legerton.

It was wonderful to spend the afternoon learning more about the YWCA’s ongoing impact in our community and connecting with so many passionate local leaders, advocates, and organizations. We are incredibly proud to support the revitalization of the YWCA pool and to contribute to a project that will create opportunities for wellness, connection, and community for years to come.

Last Friday, we had the privilege of spending the day at Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry: Veterans Village, grilling and serving lunch, for a community of individuals who have given so much in service to our country.

We had the honor of sitting down, sharing a meal, and listening to the stories of the very people we are designing new homes for. Stories of service. Of resilience. Of loss, and of hope.

Many of these veterans have already endured more than most. After Hurricane Helene, some lost the little they had worked so hard to rebuild. They were displaced, and separated from the brothers who had become their family, the ones who made a place feel like home.

One resident shared words we won’t soon forget:
“Losing everything after being homeless was a special kind of hurt. And to be separated from my brothers, because there was nowhere to go, made me feel lonely. But I am so glad that we will have a new home soon. I am so thankful to be here, and for you all for helping make home, home again.”

That is why this work matters.

At Legerton Architecture, we believe design can do more than create buildings. It can help restore dignity, rebuild community, and offer a sense of belonging. Being part of this journey alongside these veterans is something we carry with us deeply.
