This sweet piece is a quarter-sawn oak drop-front secretary from the early 1900s, with its original hardware. The secretary desk emerged during the 18th century, a time when furniture design flourished in Europe, and its name derives from the French term ‘secretaire’, meaning an enclosed writing desk, often with an upper cabinet.
Jean-François Oeben – Louis XV’s royal cabinetmaker – is believed to be the creator of the original secretaire desk. Renowned for his ability to create mechanical and marquetry desks, Oeben is also credited with the construction of the ‘secretaire à abattant’ – the first fall-front desk. The concept was simple yet revolutionary: a multi-functional piece combining a fold-out writing surface with ample storage in the form of drawers, cubbies, and, often, an upper cabinet. Its efficient design catered to the growing need for organized workspaces among professionals, merchants, and intellectuals.

This is a Japanese Shōwa Period bronze pedestal planter with elephant handles resting atop a warm wooden base. Made between 1880 and 1920, it is an antique object depicting people in a landscape, often referred to as “immortals,” in a chinoiserie style.
The Shōwa period, lasting from 1926–1989, corresponds to the 63-year reign of Japan’s Emperor Shōwa, widely known as Hirohito, who was the longest-reigning Japanese emperor. Shōwa, meaning “Bright Peace” or “Enlightened Harmony”, represented an era generally divided into two vastly different halves - the first characterized by devastating militarism and WWII, and the second by a postwar economic recovery.

She is our marvelous artist-in-residence, who you can find in the shop on Tuesdays quite often with the ever-lovely Frida.
We sat down with her for a little Q&A...

This parlor settee exudes classic Victorian styling and is crafted from walnut with floral brocade upholstery. These settees were inspired by the 18th-century French canapé, often with a high back and a shaped front, and usually standing on cabriole, turned, or saber legs.
We’re loving her feminine aesthetic and, although we are also quite keen on her current brocade, can’t help but daydream about a complete upholstery refresh.
