Truth is…being a florist has never been easy. Flowers are not a necessity like gas or groceries, but what keeps flower artists alive is something the big box stores can’t truly offer: creativity, relationships, service, emotion, and community connection.
A grocery store can sell flowers. A flower artist creates unforgettable moments.
What I have learned quickly is that you cannot sit still in this industry. You have to adapt constantly. You diversify your creative expression and build relationships with other artists, businesses, and, most importantantly, local repeat customers.
No, you don’t become wealthy in flower artistry. It takes long hours, creativity, holidays away from family, physical labor, creativity, customer service skills, creativity, business sense, and consistency. Did I mention creativity? Creative expression is very vulnerable. Don't forget that. Floral artists are sharing their heart through the flowers. It is impossible to measure the value of that magic and love.
Flower artists give people memorable magic they can’t get off a grocery shelf.
My personal goal is to showcase the magic and share my creativity.
I am learning so much, it's like a second language.
One big lesson I learned over Mother's Day weekend is to plan to sell out of flowers! I did not plan on that and so, I do not have any, ANY, flowers right now and haven't planned to get more until next week. Well this is a first for us. So, we thought about rushing around and finding flowers to fill the cooler last minute and after thinking about it, we decided to take the week off and catch up on things. We will be painting the stairs and inside walls, organizing the organized clutter and making sure DandyLion is ready to rock & roll through the summer.
We will be open again on Tuesday the 19th with a whole cooler of fresh blooms!
Before then if you need any wildflowers picked or want to come help us at Dandy, let me know, I'd love to see ya!
