A Little History on the Moko Jumbies
The Moko Jumbies aren't just performers; they are a living, breathing part of Caribbean history. Their roots stretch all the way back to West Africa, where stilt-walking was a significant part of spiritual rituals. "Moko" is a West African word often associated with a protective spirit or deity, while "Jumbie" is a Creole word meaning ghost or spirit.
When enslaved Africans were brought to the Caribbean, they carried this powerful tradition with them. The Moko Jumbies, with their height, were seen as protectors, able to rise above the chaos and see danger from afar. Over time, their costumes became more vibrant and elaborate, and the tradition became a central part of Caribbean festivals and Carnivals, a symbol of resilience, celebration, and the enduring spirit of a people. They are truly the guardians of the Caribbean spirit!
So come on down to Baytown Town Square this Saturday and experience the magic for yourself!
